Archie comics - innocent banality or evil morality in a glas

Postby Kitsune76 on Fri Aug 31, 2001 10:38 am

OK, I found the site for archie comics last night, and I *have* to know - what are your experiencesa of these oddities? Are they as banally well-intentioned as they seem or is there some greater moralising evil involved, prolly with extra toppings of evangelistic Christianity?
Kitsune
------------------

Dunno how wholesome Archie comics really are...Why, you ask? Well...
1. Its storylines usually consist of Betty and Veronica catting over Archie, and neither of these girls seem to have a problem with Archie groping all over BOTH of them. Major self esteem issues with these girls, as well as Archie.
2. There's also a secondary character who is an evil redhead named "Cherry Blossom", who schemes to steal Archie from both of the girls. Sounds more like "All My Children" to me. She's got un-wholesome things on her mind, especially with a name like that.
3. So now I'm psycho-analyzing Archie. I think it's time I went to bed...

I used to read Archie waaaaay before they got into the GOD business. It was basically wholesome teenage boy Archie trying to choose between Betty and Veronica. Choose? It was definately another time.
Jughead ate hamburgers.
But I was really more into Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Go figure.
However I do remember two Archie Comics that would blow the minds of present day readers. One involved Archie and the gang hunted by a possessed teddy bear and it had death and people dying and was scary, well for a ten year old. The other was a Sabrina comic that ran a short comic in the back. This story was the about two lovers who kill "her" husband only the husband comes back and has his revenge. Bland stuff for EC, but for Archie?! I kid you guys not.
Take care,
Jamie

[This message has been edited by JamieCOTC (edited 12-06-2001).]
