My guess is that, somehow, Alucard had split himself in half (Alucard/Girlycard), then the female half blasted the head, then allowed Maggie to 'destroy' it. But I wonder if PAPER is an ideal substitute for solid wood?

For a normal person probably not as, well, it's just paper. For a paper master though I could see it being a viable means. After all, in theory at least there should be some wood pulp in that paper so it's still sending wood though the heart. Not that it really matters though seeing how we're talking about Alucard here. I'm just going by memory, but I think I recall Integra mentioning a stake though the heart as one of the things that Hellsing made Alucard immune to in their early encounter with Anderson.
