Charles and Mary... soon to be together again...

I fail.
Well, even if they haven't been together in person, the interactions have been reverberating throughout the whole storyline.

Wherever Charles is, Mary is 'in potenia' and vice versa, right? I almost picked the trio in the survey, but... so far, Lori's still just a foil for the other two. She's gaining as a main character in her own right, but my favorites are still Charles and Mary.

Romance is always a great sideshow, but for me, the main story of this strip is the story of a great friendship. It's a heartwarming, incomprehensible whole that is greater than the sum of its otherwise rather bleak parts... Which us gothy doomlovers kinda like to start with.

Even with a happy ending looming in the distance for Charles (maybe) his truest and first connection with humanity is through Mary. And hers through him.

They're funny that way.

And hey, that's what archives are for, right?

i like the way Charls and Mary interact. it's like the way my friend Nikkie and i interact. i miss that allot. even the tension between them. it makes me wish she was back. shes been in New Mexico for about 2 years now.

That's one of the great things about this comic, though. It is a perfect window into the REAL people we know, the situations we've been through, while not being teachy and retaining it's ability to be a damn good story.

Duffy's a great writer when it comes to making you realize that your bullshit is not unique bullshit.

That all sounds about right. (Well, all except that happy ending part. Who knows?) Despite what's going on in the story, it always feels the most natural thing in the world to draw those two together. That's how most of my fanart comes in. And now everyone's patience will be rewarded.

I'm gonna have to put that one my resume somewhere.

I like that you split them up to change things up. It's good to see they're going to be back together again finally, but it presented a good opportunity to see them on their own.

Mary and Charles appearing together...

Post by Kerinbot »

BTW - this was just about the perfect strip possible for the "reunion." It's everything I imagined.

You rock, Duff. Worth the wait.

Re Mary and Charles appearing together...
Put this under the heading of "too much free time at work."

The tag line on today's strip was

"The last time you saw Charles and Mary together.
Sorry about that."

But actually, it's not nearly as bad as that. Although that was the last time they were PHYSICALLY in the same place and speaking together, as comic readers, it's certainly not been that long since we saw them together in a strip. Here's the list (remember what I said about too much free time? I babysit servers all night):

Here's the list:
holiday splash -(out of story line) new years
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20041231.html

phone communication (actually speaking to each other):
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20050302.html
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20050307.html

guest strips (out of story line)

http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20050323.html
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20050325.html

together in one strip - simultaneousness, but not talking together
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20050420.html

holiday splash -(out of story line) July 4th
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20050704.html

together in flashback mode:
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20050914.html
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20050916.html
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20050921.html

holiday splash -(out of story line) halloween
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20051031.html

more flashback mode:
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20051212.html

another both in same strip, even if not communicating:
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20051230.html
(in Mary's imagination - Charles the Manly)
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20060113.html

guest art - mary and charles:
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20060213.html
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20060217.html
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20060313.html
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20060403.html

splash - no reason (not holiday, but out of story line)
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20060412.html

guest art bonus
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20060417.html

more guest art:
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20060623.html
http://yeahduff.comicgen.com/d/20060630.html

bonus while on break:

As Duffy said, it's very significant that so many of the fan art is about these two together.

Not sure if this will be as interesting to anyone else as it was to me, but hey, I guess this is the thread to post it in, anyway.

Wow, Kerin, that's research. I was actually gonna post something like that, but thought no one would really care. Guess I was wrong.

Yeah, boredom, a T1 connection, and an unsupervised night job are a dangerous combination.

I read a lot of web comics, when I'm not rebooting servers or restarting crashed applications...
