It was a fairly slow death but most people agree that it started in Star Wars, Episode IV, A New Hope, the first special edition, at about the same time as Greedo fires. He manages to gasp in more precious life-giving air in the remakes on Empire and Jedi but it does no good. The George Lucas we know dies slowly all the way through the three prequels, eventually expiring when Annakin Skywalker shrugs and says "Sure, I'll kill everyone for you. Why not?"

I know an entire forum full of people who would argue that his death actually began with the original version of Return of the Jedi.

I'm gonna put a kabash on this thread folks - someone might want to look back at it at some point for info on the 2006 cookout, and we've completely gone past it's topic (I'm guilty too yay for guilt!). :P
