I made a complete ass of myself in engineering analysis today. Our prof is trying to teach linear algebra, and I'm in linear algebra this semester (it's actually the class right after), so I already know everything he's teaching...and he's teaching it badly. So, he started covering LU factorization (he's calling it "Loo" decomposition when it should be called "Ell You" decomposition), and he was using matlab to calculate the factors, and one of them came out in a slightly different, but obviously equivalent, form. He has this habit when he teaches, which I find COMPLETELY irritating, of saying, "...OOPS. I wonder how THAT happened?? <explanation>" Of course, his explanation is wrong.

"JUST SWITCH THE GOD DAMNED ROWS!" I think.

Then, I realize that I thought it aloud. VERY aloud. As in, everyone but teacherman* turned and looked at me. After class, one of my classmates was like, "What the Hell was that, man? 'blah blah God-damned mumble...'" and I really didn't have a satisfactory justification. T__T To top it off, I realized almost right away that "just switching the god damned rows" wouldn't be satisfactory. (It turns out matlab just switched rows in its head without bothering to actually switch the rows...if anyone cares.)

*He's hard of hearing and nearly blind, but he could've easily have just decided to ignore me. I don't know which! And now I feel like I have to tell him that it's "ell you" and not "loo" because my linear algebra prof said that I should...

(Also: One of my classmates apparently told his girlfriend, which I know from high school, who said something about it on Facebook. Shit, news travels fast.)

So we did our taxes and were to get back a little over two grand.

Then, it turns out a withdrawl I did on my 401k wasn't coded properly so it became taxable and penalty-able, and we went from 2500 or so down to 1000. Yeah, 1500 dollars in extra taxes and in penalties.

So, now we have to resubmit our taxes - fortunately H&R Block said they'd do that for free for us since we were such long term customers. But, once that's done, it's EIGHT WEEKS to get the extra money back.

What a bitch. At least the investment company IBM works through are full of brilliant people and they knew how to fix it right away... just waiting on forms.

So, my computer has some random quirks that make me insane.

One of these is that every so often it will decide to ignore the DVDROM drive entirely. Just, pretend it doesn't exist. I've tried playing with the cables, using different cables... nothing. It'll seem to work .. and then one day I'll put in a movie and BAM! nothing. The drive mysteriously vanishes from My Computer.
No Buckaroo Banzai for me during dinner last night, phooey.

The only way to fix it seems to be rebooting once or twice.
But that's totally a pain in the ass, since I always have five thousand things open (all in photoshop).

Mine did something similar, only it was the network adaptors' drivers that kept disappearing. Turns out the hardware itself was damaged and couldn't be repaired (or, it could be replaced for the cost of a new laptop).

Yeah, I just finished filling out my 1040. It says I have zero taxes. I should be happy, but...I'm scared!
