What I've been up to.

The happening place to be. Unless you go somewhere else that's more stimulating.

What I've been up to.

I've been posting these pics around, so I may as well put em' here too.

Basically copypasta.

If this topic appears twice, I dunno what happened, but it went all funny on me...

Anyway, to start off:

We boarded a turbo-otter in Hearst, which brought us and our numerous supplies to the camp. The guys who had built the camp did a good job on the dock. (I'm the one by the open doors.)

A lot of the drilling stuff was already there, even though the drillers (diamond drillers) weren't yet. Note: Diamond drills are called so because their bits are tipped with diamonds to bite through hard rock, even at several thousand foot depths, not because they drill for diamonds.

Image

And our ride left.

Image

The camp wasn't too bad. It was on what seemed to be the only piece of dry land this side of the lake.

Image

It came with a 5-star restaurant.

Image

And 5-star accommodations.

Image

And a wonderful spa.

Image

Of course, with it's own efficient and environmentally friendly electricity facility.

Image

And no camp would be complete without an internet connection.

Image

So that was that. We did a bit of clearing and what have you and went to bed.

The chopper made it's appearance a day later.

One way to get to the fishin' hole...
Didn't catch any though.

Slinging some barrels of jet fuel for the helicopter.

And the chopper blew my hat off.

Coolness, I was just back from North Bay recently. I usually go to Emerald Lake up past Sudbury but haven't this year.

Lamon lake. It's a lake near the native reserve of Webequie, maybe about 80 kms away. So, northwest of the town of Hearst, and northeast of Thunder Bay.

Wow, this is pretty interesting. What exactly were you doing there, drilling?

Prospecting in a word.

Staking claims, where you basically walk a few kms in a square shape and mark the boundaries with blazes on trees, flagging ribbon and claim posts.
Cutting lines and helicopter pads and other forms of cutting down trees to make room for this or that...
And lastly, doing "mag surveys" where I carry around this little digital box thing and take readings every 25 metres or so. It somehow determines what's under the ground.

Couple of things. I'll explain them later.

I'm still there by the way. There's internet.

It sucks the energy straight out of you. But it's good money and good exercise and good adventure, so whatever.

Internets in the wilderness is pretty cool.

We had great ping with our military equipment. Everything else was pretty coarse living so it was an amazing feeling to watch a movie in the mess tent after 5 days otherwise void of any comfort. Memories...
