Or, at least those that read this comic.

Mmmm... now Bulemia... Evan's a vain little pup.

Or maybe it's classic redirection and Evan's got his stash hidden inside a plastic bag in the 'loo. Yeah, because Evan is the kind of person to push his merchandise... yeah.

I think this is the first strip that comes off as “unfunny” or serious. It’s graphic, expressive, symbolic, pretty much says, “Evan isn’t just playing around when he says he thinks he’s overweight.” It’s great, in other words. This comic has a little more depth now that it’s not just being humorous. Of course, there’ve been other strips where you wonder where the punch-line is; everything seems so somber/cynical, but I’ve always been able to chuckle at each one at least once, after mulling it over. Even that guy that jumped off the balcony and almost killed himself was funny, just because of how ridiculously intense he was being about a game... in hindsight, I could be wrong and there’s a joke hidden somewhere in this latest installment, between the ribcage, the pubic hair, the toilet, the eyes, the obvious imagery in the last two panels... but for now it just made me think about people with psychological problems.

This page was a long time coming, as I wrote the outline to this story well over a year ago when I was on a bus in Canada. I didn't have much trouble drawing it, but I started to feel uncomfortable when I looked at the finished page on my monitor. There is no joke in this update.

On a different note, I notice the lines look crappy and digitized. I recently updgraded my computer to Adobe CS2 and it reset all my settings so I'm probably scanning it wrong. It's kind of irksome that the lines (especially the diagonals) look awful because they look nice on the original. These pages are scanned in at 800 dpi so it shouldn't look so bad. Though I notice in the past a lot of the diagonals look bad too, so I dunno.

I would say don't do any more fiddling with this page, it's perfect as is (despite what you're mulling over. Remember what happens to Star Wars when George fiddles too much over things?).

I joke earlier because that's my initial reaction to very serious things, since it's easier for me to think about them when it isn't so... real.

You capture the mood and the feelings of the whole scene. The reader can tell precisely what Evan is thinking without thought balloons, and, as you can see here, the readership has connected to the characters and voicing strong opinions.

It's times like these where we realize we've gone into Graphic Novels and out of the Comics.

Good job.

Aye. Gilded summed up my thoughts pretty well. I got down to the last two panels and found myself thinking "c'mon, Evan, don't be stupid now."

Excellent page today.

Oh I wouldn' touch the page at this point. What I meant was that the actual scan didn't come out well so I rescanned it. It looks a little better now.

Poor Evan. I want to hug him, smack him, and make him a sandwich all at the same time.

I want to smack him with a sandwich. It would be so symbolic.

If it's tuna with red onions, he'll eat it.

Well that would solve his problem then. A tasty tuna sandwich to the face.

He did think about it, though... he still might do it, if he believes he's getting bigger... maybe he realized just then that if he got into self-induced vomiting, his teeth would eventually rot. Stomach acid is some heavy stuff...

Good puppy, Evan. *pats*
