It's a lot better now since I took some Zithromax.I think this comic is making me ill by causing sleep deprivation. It's all good though, I'll deal with it. I left work early on friday and played the impossible Gradius 3 for an hour, and then slept for 16 HOURS. IT WAS INCREDIBLE.
Well, for a small fee of 12 dollars, I can send you one. I'm not allowed to post or send mp3s over the net under penalty of death from the bandleader. I have a few left if anyone's interested. It's deliciously acoustic.Never Mayhem wrote:You played drums on that record? I wanna hear that
very much, I play drums too and I'm curious as all get out.

Partial songs would be better than nothing, but the whole things would really be best. Never Mayhem wants to hear the music. Chances are twelve bucks is too much for mere curiosity. So that's a lost potential customer. Putting your music on the web actually works, particularly small bands who don't get radio airplay. Most band websites have whole songs on their websites. Sure, some people steal the songs, but a lot of people, after being impressed, will shell out for the CD.
But yeah, obviously it's not your call.

What yeahduff said. It's not your call, but you can give the artist good advice, right?
An alternative to putting up mp3s is to have the songs in flash format, that way people can listen but not download (AFAIK). For example, Canadian record label Arts & Crafts use that format; I bought the Apostle of Hustle CD after having heard the album online.

Heh, and it seems there are samples on the web. How 'bout that. I guess it's just me that's not allowed to pass them around or something.

Go there if you're curious. Track 9 and 10 are pretty good examples of my drumming. Well, the album is pretty good all round, but I'm sorta biased I guess.
Paul, how are you doing? I'm not quite sure what the situation is like exactly in Denmark.

You mean regarding the whole Mohammed cartoon affair? I'm doing fine - just checking the news a bit more often than usual to follow what's happening in the rest of the world. Denmark's all peaceful, the local Islamic fundamentalists restrict themselves to expressing their displeasure vocally - nothing violent. The general reaction here to the whole thing is mostly one of bemusement. We were talking about it at work today; we were mostly shaking our heads and cracking jokes about it. I have to say I honestly don't understand why something I'd regard as a harmless joke can piss someone off that much. Cultural gap or something.PeppermintAfterlife wrote:Paul, how are you doing? I gave my take on the matter in this thread - if my posts there seem a bit aggressive, it's because this was right after the Damascus embassy burnings, which were just bad form. I guess I know now what Americans feel like when a lot of people are really pissed at your entire country for something you personally had no stake in...

Thanks.
It seems things are actually getting calmer here. In the weekend, there was a rally of Danish Muslims who were demonstrating in favour of freedom of speech, and a Muslim MP has started a new organisation for moderate Muslims - a lot of people have joined in just a few days; they're all tired of the fundamentalists claiming to speak on behalf of all Muslims in the country. The fundamentalists are feeling the backlash among "their own" now, so they're keeping a low profile all of a sudden.

Thanks. What were you expecting?
I do a lot of snare stuff because of my rudimental background. I had already been playing marching snare for 3 years before I ever touched a drum kit. I had to kind of lay back on this album since most of the songs were written as solo pieces before a band was conceived of. Track one has some neat cymbal patters with a hi hat and a flat ride.

I was expecting... well, shitty drumming. That's what I'm always assuming I'm going to hear when I listen to local bands. I've been playing for ten years and I've heard hundreds of acts and most of them are (again, I hate saying it because it makes me sound like I think my shit doesn't stink, and it very much does) halting, insincere, just... there. Popular bands are guilty of the same thing. I think I can see now what you meant about just playing the snare drum first. You’ve got the same general approach when putting out your feel and patterns, but it’s good. I think we were talking about Crumb earlier... he could do many different styles, as a musician could perform different genres, if they were diverse player. But I don’t hear that from you. I can’t imagine you jumping into jazz or metal on a dime, rather. However, who said that makes someone good? I still think Crumb is a hack and you can get along fine with what you got. It’s like your art. I surmise this is the style your best at and it suits you very well. You probably wouldn’t do as well with anime or realism, but like some smug intellectual said long ago... to know many things is good, but to know one thing better than everything else is dank. Just some Bushism waxing for everyone.
