They're labels. Ugly Girl is actually "The ugly girl," much like Queerboy would be "The queer boy," and so on. Someone decided to label them, and it stuck. And as they came to identify with their labels, their labels became their identity. It's like taking back the word.
edit: Hm, I wonder what Queerboy's label was before he came out...
I'm guessing "Queerboy." Just because he hadn't come out doesn't mean that everyone didn't already know, or at least assume in that nasty, bigoted way that teenage boys do.

In highschool, I fit a few of them, Ruby. Now? Uh... Depends on who you ask. Some would say "Purple-haired freak;" I've also been called a "Godless Liberal Feminist," which also depends on who you ask. My son has labeled me "Mommy," and I actually respect his opinion, so maybe I'll go with that.
Hmmm, I have a multitude of names, too. There's "freaky chick", "bitchy environmentalist", I think I've been called a lesbian, and "that tall girl". I am all of the above. (Well, bi, not lesbian.)
Hmmm. I've never been called fat yet. Well, I'm not but because I'm taller than the avarage woman and most the girls I know are scrawny you could say I'm fat next to them.
