I don't think there has been any mention of Sarah's mother in the comic, actually. Just the forums. So we don't know if the reason she was gone because of death or an accident, we just know she isn't there.
And if you recall the pages from Dee's story, Merc was much kinder to Dee than Lily was willing to be. Something obviously changed. When that happened, there were probably plenty of fae that followed the old Lily's practices along with those who switched over. So to say that her followers are good people is not just an over-generalization, it's just plain unlikely. There's probably a bit of both.

Did Leanne have a silver tail? Do tails normally match hair color? ooooh new thorey!! Your tail matches the color and curlyness or straitness of your hair! That would explain why bing has a smooth, blue tail, and leelah and Sarah have bushy tails, because their hair is fuller, and Bing's hair is straight.

Yeah, Lily didn't really change, she just believed that humans and Fae should live completely seperately. She didn't think they should be "intermingling", but she also saw them as people. Mercutious idea was that they should be above the humans, he saw them as more of pets than actual people... like when he told Vali "we can get you another one" but he also seemed to believe that they could coexist.
