No, no, no. The reason conspiracy theories are allowed to be spread around the fringe of society is so as to discredit conspiracy theories in general!Actually, I thought Michael gave a very good reason for the existence of conspiracy theories. Some people feel the need for someone in charge of things, since random causuality can be rather terrifying by itself. Now that we've largely given up on Deistic(sp?) explanations, the only thing we have left to put up on our imaginary pedestal of control is ourselves (sometimes with the aid of scietifically possible aliens). It's sometimes easier to say "my life sucks because powerful forces thwarth my every move" than it is to say "my life sucks because the universe doesn't give a damn about me and I have no usable skills." As for real conspiracies, one could deduce their existence simply from a good understanding of human nature. *Of course* powerful people are going to sometimes kill each other, and lie whenever it would be to their advantage. I could probably rant on like this for a while longer, but I want to check out that Lovecraftian comic in the top post.
