Those that took the poll seem to be leaning towards descriptive racenames, though not necessarily the ones on the site. I'm going to leave that poll up a while longer, but meanwhile, what type of descriptive racenames would you suggest? Not colors, apparently. Obviously some more data about each of the races is in order, but if there is a specific type of name (like names based on land of origin) you have in mind, here is the place to post the type.
------------------

Was Wood Elven one of the original choices from the poll? Or maybe that was Forest Elven. Maybe it's time to whip out the descriptions.
Each Elven race is basically soaked with magic, those that use white magic have a theory why. In any case, each type of magic has a certain geographical locus... and so do each of the races (it's a world of island nations). So, the colors of races are actually the colors of magic they use or are "soaked in": White, Black, Gray, Brown, Red, Green, and Blue. Each color grants very specific abilities to its adepts, and the cultures of each race evolved related to those abilities.
White magic users all live on the south polar continent. Their magic relates to knowledge and mindreading. They all have white hair, rosy peach skin, and light blue eyes, with variations. The mindreaders are fairly distinct from the seekers of knowledge, most don't use both types of magic, but largely they live together in huge cabins (think indoor mall). They have always called themselves the White Elven, and called each race by it's color of magic, since they've known about the other races through their magic for a long time... unfortunately the other races don't necessarily like the color names, and the first set of alternates were suggested by the council, even though no one really likes them either. (Snow, Cave, Lava, Wild, Desert or Dune, Forest or Wood, and Sea)
Black magic users all live inside the north polar mountain island, underground. Their magic relates to creating magical creatures and communing with the afterlife. They all have black hair, very pale ivory skin, and black irises, with variations. The summoners are the ruling class, the spiritualists are largely an underclass. They have no real name, some have suggested "black elven", "cave elven", and "rulers of the black dragons", none of these are widely accepted though.
Gray magic users all live on a volcanic island, a very harsh rocky environment. Most of the life on the island is in the sea. Their magic relates to creating magical fire and stones, but they must use fire at a distance to avoid being burned. They all have gray hair, grayish-peach skin, and gray to silver eyes, with variations. The two groups are the stone magic "scientists" and the "normal elven", they live apart; magically speaking the scientists generally know fire And stone magic, while a normal elven would know one, but not the other. Racially they call themselves Lava Elven, there is some dispute as to the use of the word "Elven" as a translation though.
Brown magic users all live on a large turtle shaped island nation, which has a large jungle as well as a large grassland area. Their magic relates to communicating with animals, and adopting their traits (such as claws). Most have black hair, brown skin, and brown eyes, the variation in skin color is larger than most other races, but usually distinct from other races. Michael is the son of a brown magic user, but looks more like his blue magic using father. The brown magic users live in communities regardless of magic type, though some few users of "animal spirit" magic live solitary, feral existences, often growing claws, etc. Racially they have no name for themselves, they have been called "Wild Elven" by others, and one of their people suggested something like "the siblings", because culturally they believe all animals and elven to be spiritual siblings.
Red magic users all live on an island in the north covered by desert and sulphorous quicksand fields. They call their magic "antimagic" and it can be used to protect them from temperature extremes and other forms of magic. They all have red to red-black hair, ruddy peach skin, and red-irised eyes, with variations. A sunburned native blue or white magic user would have similar skin color. They live in nomadic groups, with few learning their antimagic beyond protection from the heat; those that are able to learn strong antimagic are considered holy and protected from the heat by their supplicants. Some elements call them racially "the holy" and other races "the unholy". Before there Were others, they had no real racename.
Two more to go. Green magic users all live on three forested equatorial islands. Their magic relates to plants and infusing wood with magic. They all have brown hair, olive to tan skin, and green to brown eyes, with variations. They wear tanned deerskins that are often a very close match for their skincolor. They are a very coherent people, by that meaning there is only one community, even though there are three islands... the islands are very close together, and in fact the separation between two of them can almost be waded across. There are limestone caves under the islands, which are sometimes used for shelter, but mostly they sleep outside. Their name for themselves means "children" or "saplings" (same word).
Blue magic users live on a large archipelago, mostly. Their magic relates to weather and water. They are usually yellow blonde (though hair dye is not uncommon), with peach skin that tans well, and blue to green eyes, with variations. Their culture involves weekly outdoor nudity when home, so most are in fact very tan. Magic use has little cultural effect, they live in communities formed of family-based clans such as the capitan or wright famiies. They call themselves racially things varying from "the jellyfish" to just "sea children".
------------------
