All i know is i am to the 6th book of the series and haven't gotten bored yet. I couldn't even get through the Hobbit saying that. I got bored half way through that book. Any way though Robert Jordan does use stereotypical veiws of men and women i still enjoy his novels! The first book is the best one (i have read so far)! heh i would like to thank my local library for having the entire set.
[This message has been edited by MoonBeam (edited 01-17-2001).]

heh...making a bong out of an apple may not work, but it would be fun to watch someone try.

Egad! if you really can make bongs out of apples, my whole world view will change.
and hey, i'm not really a tolkien fan per se
since i haven't even finished L.O.T.R. yet.
but of cause authors will 'lend' from folklore, myth and whatnot, since there is only so much storys in the world to tell.
but that doesn't mean that you have to make it SO obvious, but then again, i don't think he/they mean it to be... wich makes it even worse.
but hey any time i get tired of it all i just read Robert Asprin's 'Another fine myth'
series and laugh my ass of.

Waitasec, Robert Jordan is boring, and Tolkien ISN'T? LotR is the dullest thing I've ever misguidedly attempted to hobble through! Och! I've never been able to find book 1 of the Wheel of Time, so I'm holding off on that series, but if he actually -is- worse than Tolkien, then he must be pretty dull...
Personally, I'm more a James Morrow/maybe Iain M. Banks kinda guy...
------------------

I thought the pacing was pretty solid so far, faster than Tolkien's anyways since Eye of the World has almost the same amount of content as the whole LOTR saga.
Anyway, he hasn't bored me yet.
Only problem I have with Jordan is how he uses his 'women think all men are fools, men think all women are crazy' philosophy to the extreme sometimes.
------------------

"Only problem I have with Jordan is how he uses his 'women think all men are fools, men think all women are crazy' philosophy to the extreme sometimes."
sometimes ?
SOMETIMES ?!
every single god damn page, he does it.
and then we have the Plagarism...
it's one thing to have influence,
but Jordan so painfully obviously has stolen
so much from other authors (Tolkien for one)
that it's not even funny.
and.. and...
oh well what's the use, you are all obviously
jordan fans, that trying to convince you is like telling the Pope that GOD doesn't exist,
or like filling a broken glas with what,
or making a bong out of an apple,
it just wont work.

Oh, you mean he stole some of the stuff Tolkien stole from Norse myth? Shame on him!
But what am I trying to do? Convincing a Tolkien fan is even harder than convincing a Jordan fan!
-- Added --
One of the things I noticed while reading his books was how many similarities there were with Dune. But I don't care. Half those similarities are caused by the fact that there are only a few basic stories out there, all with unwritten subconscious rules most of us aren't even aware of, and WOT, LOTR and Dune are all based on the same basic hero story, each with its own small alterations.
The other similarities (like Aes Sedai - Bene Gesserit or Aiel - Fremen) seem disturbing at first until you see how Jordan fleshes his versions out which then prove to be nothing at all like copies of the originals (and some of them even more realistically developed than Herbert's I think).
------------------
