Well, since it's been a quiet day on the forums, and since I haven't been the victim of a flaming in a while, I'm gonna tell a little story.
The other day I went to a friend's dorm. Upon entering, I heard the most horrid, god-awful sound ever. Imagine somebody banging a knife against a drinking glass, somebody else mashing the keypad on a microwave, another person trying to saw through a two-inch think steel plate with a dull circular saw, and a fourth guy trying to scream over all this noise. I was displeased. The following conversation took place:
Me: What the hell is THAT?!
Friend: It's this Nine Inch Nails CD!
Me: Great. Turn it off.
Friend: No way! It fucking rocks!
Now, I'd heard a whole lot of hype about the "NIN" kids, but I'd never actually listened to a CD (the only song I've ever heard is "Closer," which, although I didn't like it, wasn't COMPLETELY repulsive). So since I'm a fairly open-minded guy, I decided to give it a listen. I thought that perhaps this track was one of those filler tracks that bands seem to be putting on CDs nowadays.
At any rate, while I was there I listened to the entire CD, hoping that one song would actually be somewhat enjoyable. It didn't happen. The entire CD contained THE SAME FOUR FUCKING SOUNDS IN DIFFERENT ORDER. No tune. No beat. Just godawful noise.
Now my question is: What the hell. I mean, honestly. There's a lot of music that I don't like, but I see how other people could like it. To go back to an earlier topic, let's take Jimmy Buffet as an example. I hate his music, but I can see how people would see it as fun and relaxing. But this crap. If I run my fingers accross a balloon, creating a hideous squealing noise, I usually get smacked and/or yelled at. But then, if I were to scream at the same time, and record the result onto a CD, would I be considered a musician?

Six tracks, hmmmmm....
Maybe it was an EP, or even a particularly big single...
I'm not that much of a NIN expert pre-Lost Highway though, heh...
...Hey, would you agree with me that Marilyn Manson is a tool though? He doesn't say anything a zillion other people have said, and they don't have to wear a glittery posing pouch to say it either
Heh, I've slagged off Manson, now I feel like the Saint of Killers in Book 6 of Preacher... "FLAME ME!"
------------------

Of course, it's *all down to personal preference*, but really, I don't think you were paying attention if you said the whole CD was just four sounds in different arrangements...
For one thing, The Fragile is -2- CDs, heh.
....
Oh wait, maybe it was one of the old albums! If so, then, well, I don't dig those either, and I can see what you mean -- from what I heard of Downward Spiral, it was mostly a wash of dull industrial noise (now it's my turn to be flamed, heh). But NIN can't be written off without giving The Fragile a go -- 'The Frail', 'La Mer', 'I'm Looking Forward To Joining You...', 'The Great Below', 'The Mark Has Been Made', 'Ripe'... well, actually, if I covered all the first-class tunes on the album, I'd have to type most of the track list here, which would be pretty redundant, so anyway... uh, yeah. Go NIN. Fragile good. Heh.

------------------

I'm still at the stage where I've only heard the hype and none of the songs.
------------------
