yeah, i meant to say opus, but aren't they done by the same creator? i never read much of bloom county to form an opinion. from what i can remember, i wasn't that big a fan of bloom county either. i guess it's tough to be proficient for so many years. on the other hand , far side is very very good. i'll never forget the strip where one spider scares another so that he lets go a spool of webbing beneath him. do you think bluesrock is too edgy for newspaper syndication?

Edgy

Ah! I Mis-Understood your question...OK Let's talk content....

Too Edgy?....YEP!

Not all of it, and the humor is very good.. and creative... but you can't do "balloon protection" jokes in the newspapers! Kid's read these things for crying out loud especially on Sunday's when they're in color. Parent's HATE having to answer embarassing questions (especially on Sundays) SO like it or not... it HAS to be clean to get into the Papers... You know... those four letter words? They gotta go. (If you've used any.) Even something like Zippy the Pinhead can't just exclaim "DAMN" and get away with it. More importantly... if you must resort to obscenity... it means you're going for a cheap shock and your readership might resent it. There is ALWAYS a different way to say the same thing. (I never use obscenity .. becomes a bad habit)
So reason one for cleaning up is the syndicates will take you MUCH more seriously..Reason two is a bit far reaching.
IF you get syndicated and IF you manage to break into the major markets you're doing well indeed... BUT to become a MAJOR strip, you need to penetrate a very difficult, SMALL newspaper market. Usually smaller towns and a bit rural and much more likely to be offended by Foul language or inappropriate content.

Overall, I'd say you have a better than decent shot. Problem is... your strip has to be what the syndicates are looking for AT THE TIME. There's no way to know exactly what but study demographics and get that feedback from the editors (I mentioned to you in e-mail).

Just remember re: Syndication...
It can happen to ANYONE!
