Fainting Spells

Post by Biev »

I just realized I've been here almost a year and I've never actually pitched Fainting Spells. So I'm going to remedy that right away : )

To put it in context, I first started Fainting Spells as a little art experiment. By this I mean I've been letting the artwork drive the story, rather the other way around. I did want it to have some continuity, so it pretty much evolved into a webcomic on its own. I think it has found its own style over time, but I still try to vary the medium as much as possible. At the moment, I'm using pencil over sandpaper, but I've used chalk, clay, paint etc.

I'd rather not reveal too much about the story because it's meant to surprise. I can say that it has a dreamlike feel, and takes you in all sorts of crazy directions, and it's usually cute and a tad creepy at the same time : )

Here's a preview of the latest page (click for full size):

And here is where you can find it:

Please take a look at it, comment, critique, any feedback is appreciated!

The contrast is low, and it makes things hard to see at times. It may also be worth it to do the text by computer to help it stand out more.

A few things that I like about this comic:

1) I like the fact that even though it has an "experimental" feel, there's nothing half-assed or amateurish about it. A lot of webcomics could claim to be experimental, but this is one of the few that doesn't try to hide a lack of competence behind that label.

2) The art is lovely.

3) The story can be a little hard to follow at times, but I'll usually "get it" if I go back and re-read it (or parts of it). It's a little too deep to be enjoyed without putting some effort into it. That wouldn't be a good thing if the story wasn't worth the time it takes to understand it, but this one is.

4) It feels like an there's an artistic statement in progress here. Since the story is still ongoing, I can't say for sure what exactly that statement is, but so few webcomics give me the feeling that the creator has something consequential to say, so it's refreshing when one does.

Oh, and I have no trouble reading the text. Could be a monitor issue.

I guess the story line or whatever you would call it isnt really my cup of tea, but the art is amazing. I mean it. I love the art. Fantastic.
