A movie buff at work keeps telling me that the 1930's version of King Kong, The Bad Seed and Forbidden Planet are the tops. Well, I know I might get boo'd off the stage, but Dracula (1992) is my favorite followed not particular order by: Aliens, Lock Stock 2 Barrels, Frailty, A Simple Plan, and for the animated flicks: Fire & Ice, Heavy Metal and Ninja Scroll. And dammit if I keep watching that Apocalypto, it'll rank among my favorites.

Any way I can't believe someone would bash 300 but loves Cranked. I mean, at least 300 was in a fantasy setting. Being set in reality, I called BS on Cranked within the first 10 minutes (as I also did for The Transporter 1, 2). Also it was waaaaay too much cursing in it for me (and I curse like a sailor). I just don't dig excessive gunplay w/ over-the-top stunts like Faceoff and MI 2.

I heard that metacritic and imdb have similar lists that look quite different, but I'm too lazy to look for them.

I'm actually ok with cartoons on there. I mean, movies like The Lion King maybe haven't broken new movie-making ground, raising the bar for millions of films to come, but dammit it's influenced generation after generation.

I think part of it was that 300 was at least half-assed taking itself seriously, whereas Crank wasn't being serious at all.

Speaking of "excessive gunplay," anyone seen Shoot 'Em Up yet? I really wanted to.

The action in Crank was hilarious, fast paced, and just plain nonsense fun. 300 tried to impose some morals, tried to justify a bunch of very samey slaughter, and just wasn't fun.

I guess it's all about what you enjoy, but I wouldn't put 300 in any list such as this just as I wouldn't put Crank or Transporter in any list such as this.

The Dark Knight. Fantastic action combined with fantastic plot and fantastic writing and dialogue.
If all movies could be this good, we would live in theaters.

Metropolois or Aliens. In both cases I have better selections. Brazil for Metropolis and Alien (the first in the series) for Aliens. But if I couldn't have those, either could be replaced with 300 in my book.

Metropolis has the best statue of skeletal death I have ever seen in a movie.

I suspect this was because it was a real skeleton.

Okay, true. 300 did have a more serious tone buuuut it still had way too many fantasy element for me to consider it anything but a graphic novel on optical steroids.

Now, given my utter disdain for MI 2, Face-off and such... I thank you for bringing up a movie that I'd forgot to mention...Shoot Em Up. Oh Gawd, it was waaaay too much BS for me -and I do have a man-crush on Clive and I've told my wife ever since Dracula (my Fav movie) that I'd jump ship in a sec for Monica Bellucci. But still it was utter crap (even with Pig-vomit playing the villian!). Oh yeah, let me go 'head and throw 'The Marine' on the BS pile as well.

Now Hellboy 1 and then Batman Returns used to be my tops comic book conversions. But after seeing the Dark Knight...whoa! That movie just pimp-smacked anyone thinking about doing another comic book movie. Instant classic!

Because it had all of the history content you could fit on the back of a postage stamp? Metropolis was such an important, inspiring and enduring movie, and 300 was box office trash that will be forgotten in less than a decade.

Different strokes for different folks I guess, but I'm honestly very glad you're not in the movie industry!

At it's core, 300 was historically accurate. Remarkably so. Lest you think that's a lame reason for me to elevate 300 to a top 50 mark, it's also why Shindler's List would be in my top 50. At it's core, it too is historically accurate. If it'd been a simple fiction, it'd have still been a good movie, but would have been replaced on the top 50 by something better. Historical accuracy makes it great.

Likewise with 300. It's an action film. On it's own, it's a good film. Because it tells a true story well, it's a great film.

::edit:: I liked Metropolis. Yeahduff challenged me to pick one in the 50 list that I had seen, to replace with 300. I've only seen about half of these and of those I Saw, Metropolis was at the bottom. Which would you remove?

On the basis of disregarding Metropolis? Heck yes I'd say that!

Being vaguely based on real events does not mean automatically good. Where's Saving Private Ryan on that list? Or every other World War 2 movie ever made? Every 'Nam movie? Pearl Harbour. Ali. World Trade Center. Alexander. United 93. Some of these are good, some of them are terrible, all are based on true events. Only really Private Ryan would be in with a shot for a top 50 list.

Saving Private Ryan will NEVER be in my top 50 list because of the years of jokes I had to endure about "Saving Ryan's Privates".

I didn't say that every historically accurate movie had to automatically be placed in the top 50, Komi. I said that I really liked 300, and the fact that it was historically accurate took it from a good movie to a great movie.

For 300? None of them

I'd take out the Road Warrior and replace with Saving Private Ryan or Full Metal Jacket, but I do appreciate how it was the template for every other post apocalyptic movie of the time. To be fair I couldn't make it the whole way through it though, so maybe I missed a good bit.

I'd take out Aliens to replace with 300 in a hearbeat. Alien was an amazing piece of horror cinema.
Aliens wasn't.

I also think all this 300 hating because its "Hollywood action trash" is extremely unfair. Was Predator really such an amazing peak of drama? No, it was action trash. And 20 odd years on, everyone still loves it.

It's difficult to say which I like better, Alien or Aliens since both movie seem pretty different. But Aliens is a far better movie than 300. I enjoyed 300, but it seems kinda gimicky to be considered one of the greatest 50 movies of all time.

Predator is not action trash.
