Re: Curious. (Usernames and Ads)
Well there was really only two choices, integrate the 160x600 or integrate 300x250, or both. I chose the latter and put the CG newsbox in as well.Phact0rri wrote: I'm not sure how to make it work. if you put it vertical along the margins, it'd take away from the page viewing pleasure of people on smaller monitors. the best suggestion, would be if it could be capsuled with the same bordering as the themes. or even capsuled below the theme/forum information. the way it is now, it does kinda just look like riffraff at the bottom of my screen.
another suggestion.. as much as I for one, would probably be annoyed with... other forums seperate posts with the ads. would that be an option? at least it'd look a little better than where it is now. Granted the newsbox thing probably wouldn't go over to well like that.
As I've explained several times already in the chat:
a) 728x90 can only go above the fold
b) 160x600 can only go in margins, outside content (or inside content in columns)
c) 300x250 can only go inside content (it's supposed to actually appear inline), not after content.
The newsbox is 150x300, so that means that 25 pixels had to be padded to the top of the 300x250.
I suppose there is the option of putting multiple newsboxes to solve the white space problem, but I'm waiting to hear back on other options. Feel free to suggest other things that can take up the white space.
If more people actually used the alexa bar, it might give online comics a better visibility on the web. If you look at the current top 10, half are user driven.
3 is youtube, 6 is myspace, 7 is wikipedia, 8 is facebook, 9 is blogger.
Also, our forums, on a whole have the same reach as the top comics on our site.

Multiple newsboxes crossed my mind. I'd be OK with that.

Whatever happened to just having horizontal ads at the top?
And if we're talking about the ComicGen ads, how about a new banner that takes up less space vertically?

Re: Curious. (Usernames and Ads)
Horizontal ads don't always pay, and lots of people (on the forums) don't see them since they goto the most recent post which is on the bottom. In case you haven't noticed, the large ads only appear on the bottom of the viewtopic so far.Linkara wrote:Whatever happened to just having horizontal ads at the top?

Cause we already have a 150 pixel wide by 300 pixel high newsbox and asking everyone to abandon it means everyone who already has once has to redesign their site to accommodate it.

Well, I didn't mean abandoning the old one, just adding a second newsbox that people could put in or just have it be an exclusive one for the bottom of the forum.Kisai wrote: Cause we already have a 150 pixel wide by 300 pixel high newsbox and asking everyone to abandon it means everyone who already has once has to redesign their site to accommodate it.

Re: Curious. (Usernames and Ads)
I hate to agree with Linkara, but he's right. A horizontal ad, that people have to put in for, like a pog, would be better. The amount of space it takes up vertically is annoying and I think putting more than one newsbox ad down there at a time would be annoying to people to don't view their internet browsers at full screen (like me).
Edit: Though I'm not totally sure why we need news boxes on the forums. So many of them are painful to look at.

I like that idea. Have anyone that wants make a new ad. Most of us have similar ads in our sigs anyway.

Also on names, can I request that the J and B in my log in name be capitalized as well. Just capitalizing the C feels funny.

I'm not understanding how a horizontal newsbox solves the problem.

Re: Curious. (Usernames and Ads)
Is it just me...
The only newsbox Ad I'm getting at the bottom of the forums is a rather crummy one about cats. I get normal newsboxes elsewhere (I double-checked), but just the cat one in the forums.
I was surprised to see my name capitalized. Meh. Doesn't bother me. If it's the quickest fix to the wiki issue, I'm cool with that.

Mine rotate just fine.
I dunno. It'll look a little better, but still not great.Yeahduff wrote:I'm not understanding how a horizontal newsbox solves the problem.

What about a current "top X comics on comicgenesis.com list" ?

Better than some of the other MMORPG ones that are in the rotation.Jesusabdullah wrote:weird pet ad
It sure would be nice not to have to scroll past the ads to get to the "back to [subforum]" link, but I understand the need for revenue. I am not terribly happy about the prospect of having to go through slews of new newsboxes if we change the sizes, though...

Re: Curious. (Usernames and Ads)
For some reason, attempting to move that link only works on the tweaks (pink) forum. When I tried it on the prosilverCG theme (where the avatars are on the left) it caused the newsbox to appear over the link.Keffria wrote:Better than some of the other MMORPG ones that are in the rotation.Jesusabdullah wrote:weird pet ad

To be honest, I'm more offended my newsbox shares space with that hideous inflating woman.CJBurgandy wrote:Though I'm not totally sure why we need news boxes on the forums. So many of them are painful to look at.

Today mine are rotating again. Good thing too - I was pretty tired of seeing the same cats all the time.TheSuburbanLetdown wrote:Mine rotate just fine.
