Re: What movies have you seen recently?
How exactly is it going to be any different from all the other Adjective Movies?

Cary Elwes.

I can carry elves, up to ten of them, provided they are very small.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I just got back from Prince Caspian.
I will start by stating that The Chronicles of Narnia was my Lord of the Rings. When I was a kid, I spent an entire summer reading and re-reading the entire series. When The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe came out, I saw it on opening night. I can't wait for Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which was my absolute favorite book in the series. I enjoyed L,W,&W, but I thought it focused a little too much on the battle, and the rest of the movie moved a bit too slowly, as a lead-up to the battle. All in all, it was a good movie, but it wasn't how I remembered the book, so it sullied my opinion.
I didn't have to worry about a similar experience with Prince Caspian, because, honestly, it was my least favorite installment of the series, and I've always had trouble hanging onto the details of the narrative. So, watching the movie tonight was pretty much a blank-slate experience, more or less, anyway. So, all in all, it was a very enjoyable movie for me. The battles were great, the characterizations were very well played (the ethnic qualities of the Telmarines was an enjoyable twist of detail for me) the creatures were awesome, and the overall setting and design of the movie really made me wish I had a suit of armor, and access to a castle. So, all in all, I was sucked in.
Not Quite Spoilers, but Possibly Close Enough
Of the few details and impressions that did stick in my skull about the book, and how they lined up with the movie, I'll say this; the treatment of the Pevensie kids as out of place relics in a world they loved but lost was done well enough, the inevitable romantic subtext between Caspian and Susan was nicely understated, the overall feeling of atrocity committed against the Narnian creatures in the history while the kids were away was really kinda weak. Also, the one actual detail from the book that I remember, of Edmond eating a loam brownie which tasted like dirt, was sadly left out.
All in all, it was a good second outing, and I felt it was stronger than the first, because it started with the focus of "Epic Battle Movie," rather than trying to turn itself into one. It lived up to my expectations, and was worth the trip to the theater. Just steel yourself for the VERY OUT OF PLACE Regina Spector ballad in the last two minutes of the movie. It kinda broke the spell that had been woven for me over the previous two hours.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I also saw Prince Caspian today! For me it was literally a blank slate experience, as I don't remember a damn thing about the actual book. In fact, if two months ago, you were to say 'Prince Caspian' to me, I doubt I'd have been able to pin it as a Narnia book.
And yes, I did read them all.
It was a good movie, although I was mildly weirded out by the apparently Spanish Conquistadors and their thousand-year old genocide of native Narnians. It wasn't particularly badly portrayed but . . . does that count as an ethnic slur?
I really liked the song, actually. It was still a huge 'WTF' moment.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I loved the Spanishness of them. It didn't strike me as having anything to do with the Conquistador era, actually. After all, Spain has as much of a bloody and violent medieval history as any other European country, what with their crusades and inquisitions and all, and I'd go so far as to say that it was a HUGE breath of fresh air that they weren't sporting horrible British or French accents, which are tired out in Hollywood fare. So, I felt it was fitting to throw Spain the nod on this one. Plus, it meant we got to look as some Spanish influenced weapons and armor, which have always struck me as quite elegant forms of steel. So, yeah, not a problem for me, and, no I don't think it counts as an ethnic slur. IBrownEyedCat wrote:

You guys are looking forward to Indiana Jones eh?

It's best that your childhoods assume the position in advance. While walking the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of Kung Fu Panda, George Lucas hinted to reporters about the possibility of a sequel to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
"I haven't even told Steven [Spielberg] or Harrison this," he said. "But I have an idea to make Shia [LaBeouf] the lead character next time and have Harrison come back like Sean Connery did in the last movie. I can see it working out."

Nothing shocks me anymore, really. Like Lucas has had a good track record lately anyway.

That's exactly what I've feared for the next Indy movie. That they're going to pass the torch from Harrison to LaBeouf. Could senility be setting in for Lucas?Mr.Bob wrote:You guys are looking forward to Indiana Jones eh?

Must be from the 80s`.. Its In New York.. A group of friends keep talking on the phone, making appointments but missing them, a woman is having a baby, some othe woman dies... almost all of It happens through phone talks. Very cool film
Anybody know the name?
A great new movie I saw Is "Estômago" - but It just came out here In Brasil so It probably will be awhile until most of you can get It (that Is IF It will be available somewhere else than here).. Great movie though

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Despite the fact that I was probably too tired to do so, I saw Prince Caspian last night. For some reason all day beforehand I was trying to think of a certain character's name, and I just couldn't!!! (It was 'Reepicheep.' I don't know why I couldn't place that name; I've always liked the character.)
Anyway, I liked the movie...but it's been awhile since I've read the books, so I really do need to re-read it and compare. I'm really hoping they'll do all the books...if they do, I'm REALLY really looking forward to seeing how they do the last one (I have some pretty specific images in mind for that one especially, from when I read it).
As for this Narnia movie, my favorite part *not really spoilers, but sorta* (aside from the CGI kitties [lots of them, with cute expressions] and the retarded bear [he only had one line, but man...it made all four of us crack up off and on for the rest of the night]) were the trees...the trees were freaking awesome! (Heehee...that part kinda backs up Richie's theory that Aslan's actually a high-level druid, too.) CGI was awesome, costumes were neat, and wherever they filmed the movie was gorgeous, and I want to go there now! All in all, a pretty good flick!
Next week: Indy!!!!!

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
A producer is publicizing ideas for a film, prior to even telling the director and main actor those ideas, let alone asking them what they think about it. That's so... so... so nerdy?KWill wrote:Good news is that he hasn't told the two people that could stop him yet. Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Indy 4 checklist:
- opening shot of Paramount mountain
- Opening sequence concluding a preceding adventure
- Indy gets slapped (by a girl)
- Indy rescues some broad
- Comedy sidekick
- Indy uses at least 4 different kinds of transport
- Indy travels over an animated map
- Indy swings across a gap with his whip
- Indy's hat rolls to his feet
- Indy's gun is empty! (Or missing)
- Indy outruns certain doom (rolling boulders, flooding water, destructing temples)
- Indy remarks on his hatred of snakes/nazis
- Indy remarks on artefacts belonging in museums
- A conveyor-belt fight with deadly end (tank track, ship propeller, rock smasher)
- Indy reads secret ancient writings
- Secret passageways
- Elaborate death-traps (wall spikes, descending ceilings, giant blades)
- Cheering ethnic locals
- Creepy animal infestation (snakes, bugs, rats)
- Indy gets the macguffin but it is taken away from him
- Villain gets really annoyed with Indy when he pops up out of nowhere AGAIN and is still not dead
- High speed vehicle chase where he takes out an entire convoy (or several minecarts)
- Big Guy fight
- Villain has a horrific death involving profound mystical things (face melting, burning stones, rapid ageing)
- Indy loses the macguffin altogether but wins anyway
- Indy starts out a cynic but by the end is a true believer
Humm I hope I didn't miss anything.
