Flying Cleavage Monkeys!
The other day, the other three days actually, my fiancé and I sat down to watch what seemed like a rather intriguing program. The scifi channel, known for shitty movies, decent shows and sometimes decent miniseries was putting on a miniseries that was a "new twist" on the Wizard of Oz called Tin Man.
For the most part it was pretty decent, i don't know if any of you saw it, but there were two aspects that were particularly distracting and detremental to enjoying the miniseries.
The first of which was the fact that instead of Oz they kept calling it "the outer zone" or "The O.Z." and it kept sounding like The O.C. and driving me nuts.
The second is the subject of this post. Flying Cleavage Monkeys. The analog of the wicked witch of the west has her customary flying monkeys, but in the form of tattoos on her upper chest and when she wishes to release.. her monkeys... she opens up her shall, thrusts her chest forward and the tattoos become flying monkeys.
The idea behind tattoos becoming creatures is fairly cool, but really, who thought "hey! let's have her thrust her chest out when she sends them out!"
I just can't figure out who comes up with these things, and worse, how many people between them and us had to say "yeah, okay, that's a good idea, let's go with that."
here's a pic of the actress and her tattoos for reference, at least she was hot.
edit: damn, that link didn't work well, oh well, look it up on scifi.com, you'll see what i mean.

I saw Tin Man. Been talking with friends on LJ about it, and the flying cleavage monkeys (that exact phrase!) are a part of the conversation.
I was more concerned that the dog Toto shapechanges into an old, fat black man.
It's...bad. Not eyesearingly horrible like Battlefield Earth, and not campy trash like many SciFi channel films. It's just on the unpleasant side of mediocre. I suspect there were a dozen different writers, and they tried to come up with camp by committee.
The Tin Man himself is the best thing in the miniseries. He's the only one with normal hair and sensible clothing, and one of the few actors with talent. The actress who plays Dorothy ('DG') is horrible -- I think they hired her for her freakish, anime-like eyes and never wondered if she knew how to act. The girl playing the evil witch is an okay actress but the lines, clothing, and hair they gave her were uniformly awful. Richard Dreyfuss as the Wizard has some opportunities to out-act the others but he's mostly wasted (in more ways than one).
All of the above is in my humble opinion, of course. I'm sure some people loved it.

I want to see it now, too. But because of the chest thing, though.theSuburbanLetdown wrote:One of my coworkers was telling me about this. I want to see it now. Not because of the chest thing though. The Tin Man sounds mysterious.
My freshman year roommate always dreamed about making this movie. Wonder if he's responsible.

I agree with kolter.rkolter wrote:Oooh yeah it is. The original was not crap. The new version? Total stinky butt tomatoes.prettysenshi wrote:BattleStar Galactica is NOT craprkolter wrote: Anymore they produce crap. I gave them a loooong time to get better too, and they just never did.
I also disagree a lot with remus, it wasn't nearly as bad as he makes it out, and leave poor Zooey Deschanel alone, she's cute and her acting is fine!

I never seen teh old one, but if i did, I KNOW i wouldn't like it, simply because all scifi shows before B5's time just doesn't appeal to me.rkolter wrote:Oooh yeah it is. The original was not crap. Yeah it is. Don't get me wrong, some of the writing and acting is really good. I especially liked the second episode where no one could sleep - very well done. However, the internal logic is dicey to say the very least (I mean, robots who are completely indistinguishable from humans? Wouldn't they then be humans?).prettysenshi wrote:BattleStar Galactica is NOT crap

Oh yeah, we were talking about it earlier. Tin Man, I mean.
Overall I quite enjoyed it, especially the steampunk ambiance. Mad props to the set and costume designers. ;D The writing could have used a bit more polishing, and some of the acting wasn't the greatest...but overall I enjoyed it greatly. Glitch was particularly well done, and even some of the plot points (BRAIN IN A JAR!) were genuinely intriguing. I didn't actually seem fanficish at all to me...somehow it escaped the label. Calling it the 'O. Z.' did bother me a lot, for the exact reasons lego mentioned. The other thing that bothered me was the girl's parents. I don't want to spoil it for people, but that was kinda dumb. The cleavage monkeys didn't bother me much for some reason. I could wish for better CG and I miss the feathery wings, but the bat like features were interesting.
Overall it reminded me of a cross between City of Lost Children and 10th Kingdom. Honestly, you don't see much heavy steampunk in film, so it was a nice change of pace.
Me: BSG: We're too emo to touch.
My brother: "I'm. Too emo for this ship. Too emo to be hip. Too emo by faaaaar."

I was disappointed. Very disappointed. The more I learn about DG the less I want to watch it. I mean sure, new breath of air, but its just Indiana Jones gone Steampunk with some magic. Nothing about the story suggests that Tin Man is an important character. He should of been the first character, more around him, less about the quest for the emerald jewel, the black and white story epic battle about to take place. Gah, those storylines and DG's acting... GAH...
The character is like "Oh I'm not from Kansas, I'm from this fantasy world with some steampunk... I should be upset or something but I'm rather ... oh my parents were lies my entire life? My mom blocked all my memories? My new found sister is destroying a world I never knew? I should care someway, right?"

It's also on their site http://www.scifi.com/tinman/. Over all it was decent, but I wasn't expecting a lot. The most impressive thing for me was the city and castle designs, specifically when they did the flyovers. Definitely a fan of Glitch. Alan Cummings did the "lacking a mind" bit wonderfully.legostargalactica wrote:it's the scifi channel, they'll play it again, probably soon.mvmarcz wrote:We finally got sci fi on our basic cable channels and I MISSED IT T_T I don't actually watch alot of non cartoon tv and I was looking forward to Tin Man I can't believe I missed it >(

Ha ha! Yes, this was my formost acting complaint. I didn't think she did a very good job at all. Just kinda pulled along by the plot. But I thought they did focuse on Cane alot, although Glitch needed some more time as his story was very interesting. The Mortician wrote: Gah, those storylines and DG's acting... GAH...
