237 reasons to have sex, according to some researchers.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070801/ap_ ... ex_reasons
WASHINGTON - After exhaustively compiling a list of the 237 reasons why people have sex, researchers found that young men and women get intimate for mostly the same motivations. It's more about lust in the body than a love connection in the heart.

College-aged men and women agree on their top reasons for having sex — they were attracted to the person, they wanted to experience physical pleasure and "it feels good," according to a peer-reviewed study in the August edition of Archives of Sexual Behavior. Twenty of the top 25 reasons given for having sex were the same for men and women.

Expressing love and showing affection were in the top 10 for both men and women, but they did take a back seat to the clear No. 1: "I was attracted to the person."

Researchers at the University of Texas spent five years and their own money to study the overlooked why behind sex while others were spending their time on the how.

"It's refuted a lot of gender stereotypes ... that men only want sex for the physical pleasure and women want love," said University of Texas clinical psychology professor Cindy Meston, the study's co-author. "That's not what I came up with in my findings."

Forget thinking that men are from Mars and women from Venus, "the more we look, the more we find similarity," said Dr. Irwin Goldstein, director of sexual medicine at Alvarado Hospital in San Diego. Goldstein, who wasn't part of Meston's study, said the Texas research made a lot of sense and adds to growing evidence that the vaunted differences in the genders may only be among people with sexual problems.

Meston and colleague David Buss first questioned 444 men and women — ranging in age from 17 to 52 — to come up with a list of 237 distinct reasons people have sex. They ranged from "It's fun" which men ranked fourth and women ranked eighth to "I wanted to give someone else a sexually transmitted disease" which ranked on the bottom by women.

Once they came up with that long list, Meston and Buss asked 1,549 college students taking psychology classes to rank the reasons on a one-to-five scale on how they applied to their experiences.

"None of the gender differences are all that great," Meston said. "Men were more likely to be opportunistic towards having sex, so if sex were there and available they would jump on it, somewhat more so than women. Women were more likely to have sex because they felt they needed to please their partner."

But this is among college students, when Meston conceded "hormones run rampant." She predicted huge differences when older groups of people are studied.

Since her study came out Tuesday, people are coming up with new reasons to have sex.

"Originally, I thought that we exhaustively compiled the list, but now I found that there should be some added," Meston said.
I've got to point out the Clerks reference because 37 can't just be a coincidence! Can it?

I can really only think of two reasons: "I wanted to" and "I was forced to."

Everything else just seems like details...

I imagine that could be said of any study. Details are good.

Hahaha.

Amusing coincidences aside, I wish researchers wouldn't waste their time with such asinine bullshit.

sex is awesome! what are you talking about? Without sex, I wouldn't be here. It's the most intimate form of pleasure and communication there is! Sex makes us close to God (IMO).

Maybe you're just have sex with the wrong person.

Agreed. If that's the only goal, I know plenty of lonely folks who'd be perfectly willing to help...

What, researchers aren't allowed to have fun?

And me. But in my case, 'god' is a nickname for my husband.

Well, if by "sex is overrated", you means that sometimes a quiet evening in a coffee bar spent with a person you love is quite enough to feel intimate with her and to have a good time, with that I fully agree.
On the other hand, if by that you mean that sex isn't pleasurable at all, then someone must be doing something wrong.

(but sex making you closer to god? Geez, get offa that cloud)

What, researchers aren't allowed to have fun?
Yah, anytime someone wants to research anything other than cancer or AIDS everyone jumps down their throats saying it's a wast of time. There are billions of people who don't study cancer, but you never hear anyone complaining about them. "What? That guy's an accountant? What an ass, he should be working to cure cancer!" "Why is she wasting precious money opining a restaurant? That money could be used to fight AIDS!"

Not every Scientist has to dedicate their lives to some disease, there are a lot of other things out there to be interested in.

Besides, the asinine bullshit has its place. I want to know about the world around me, and sometimes I want it on a level I can understand rather than checking out 4 books on the string theory or something. Sure this may seem pointless, but it keeps science "human". Besides, there are plenty of scientists researching cancer, 3 who go off and do this isnt going to set back the cure date by 5 years.

That, and this actually has an application, in that there's more to it than the list of reasons why people have sex. Why people have sex is actually a fairly interesting question, since sexual behavior in people is fairly complex--certainly more so than it is for many other creatures. For example, I've read/heard/inferred at times that we don't even know whether monogamy or polygamy is more "natural" for humans, religious and societal reasons aside. I also remember that not too long ago there was discussion in these forums about whether sex was just for making babies, or whether its purposes were more varied. Getting some statistics on why people say they have sex could easily be useful in trying to answer these types of questions.

(Keep in mind I haven't read up on this subject, so there's probably something I don't know.)

They're both natural, it just depends on the situation. On a biological level, we have an interest both in pair-bonding (which helps raise offspring) and in sneaking in extra variation in our offsprings' DNA.

In a society where the men suffer from high amounts of income inequality, several women may be better off married to one rich guy and sharing his wealth to raise their children than all married to different poor guys. The majority of guys in such a society, of course, do not benefit, because there are fewer females to go around.

In a society with more equality, men and women benefit more from monogamy.

I speculate that this is part of why we see many poly folks in nerdy communities--the lack of women in many of these communities means that a guy is better off being one of a girl's five partners than not having any female companionship at all, and because women in these communities are highly valued, they can demand more partners.

(Please forgive the heteronormity of this post. I'm only speaking in generalities, obviously, and not excluding homosexuals for nefarious reasons, only statistical ones.)
