Boycott your Midterms!!!!!!

Post by Everie »

If you're like me, then you understand that this time of year is horrible. In the sense that university/college seems it fit to dump an entire year's worth of projects and essays and exams on you just becuase they find it entertaining to themselves. Heck, they have TAs to do the grading!

Wouldn't it be amazing to have one of those VISA things where they erase an entire month's amount of credit in some random draw, but have it be for school? "Oh! You're student number came up today! You're exempt from doing Project X, and Exam A!"

-.-

if only. lol

What's the most annoying thing you guys are working on now?

Mine has definitly got to be this Marketing Midterm that is 10 chapters (50 very long...very small print pages...) That is definitly next week....and I'm definitly just in the mood to draw haha XD

Heh. I love these topics.

Because when you finally finish school you'll find out how much work real life is instead. :)

Oh I'm sure! lol
It's just fun to rant sometimes ^^

and at least then I beleive that it's organized into one or two sections...versus how in school someone could be doing a million different aspects of work ranging from art to science and the switchover is a little difficult to say the least lol

The only reason I'm even bothering to keep an A-average is because I need it to keep my scholarship. This is a pain in the butt, but having tuition costs halved is nice.

The most annoying project I'm working on is annoying for a different reason than what you're thinking. You know those collages you do in elementary school where you cut out magazine pictures and glued them onto a piece of construction paper? And everyone got As for effort? That's exactly what we're doing in my college art class, grading policy and all. It's frusterating to have a teacher treat you like a second grader.

Last year cuz of midterms I had a meltdown. This year, I'm trying to keep on top of things, but it's still really difficult. Three papers due in the same week is a bitch to do.

The thing is, in most cases, when I get stressed out, it's my own fault for procrastinating. Most of my profs are really good about giving lots of notice before assignments are due.

Also, I only had one midterm, since just about all my courses are full-year ones and therefore have midterms around Christmas. :3

ahhhh I know exactly what you mean!
I'm in this joint York/Sheridan Graphic Design program, and the head of the department likes to come into the massive lecture halls and talk to us. Being in third year, he likes to talk about graduation and stuff. But the way he talks...really...really...slowly.... you know, pausing for effect?

Yeah.
Makes him sound like he thinks we're 5 or something.

Chemistry is irritating right now. A lot of it is going to be memorizing ions and rules and stuff, which I hate. I prefer remembering how to use something and learning it through regular use, which happens somewhat with the ions, but I should still be able to look them up dammit! This wouldn't even be that big a deal except for that the homework system sucks, and in order to get an A in the class I can only slack on either tests or the homework, not both. :x

luckily for me, most of my teachers treat me like I'm actually more competent than I am.

which means, if I have to cut things out of a magazine and paste, then I have to do so based tonally, which means I have to search through 20-30 magazines to find a swatch of extremely dark yellow.

that, and the tests for contemporary art, where I not only have to memorise 100+ pages of print, but 100+ slides, and how those slides relate to the artists, and the information in the print.

of course, These are just regular assignments, and I don't seem to have midterms.

as for out in the real world, I don't doubt there is as much work, but I was under the impression that it was a little bit less...varied over subjects.
It's easier to remember stuff you use all the time, and it's easier to work in one area than to constantly switch gears and work on 6 completely different projects at once.

Right now, I have a midterm in my Marketing course (im about 150 pages in my textbook behind becuase I learn more in the lectures...forgetting that the prof would probably be leaving things out from the text...lol) so now I'm going over these crazy long pages that aren't really sticking.

But ya, I've got that, a magazine layout due for my editorial design class, my portfolio started and finished, my website for my portfolio finished (though it IS half done at least...just have to buy the domain name now lol), ummm what else...lol

oh yeah, apply for my internship, that's a big one haha

and do a huge map for my information design class.

As a joke once, during a group critique in class after getting around 5 new assignments, I asked the class who wanted to jump out the window with me, and the professor looked directly at me, smiled and said (very seriously mind you)
"Oh no dear, you have way too much work to do that"

I have to have it done before I can call the internship places. Becuase if they call me in for an interview lets say um...tomorrow? I'll be screwed lol.

Keep in mind that Dutch is a teacher. His work is about as close to school as it gets; he has homework too. I think he's just bitter. Image

I miss college, it was fun. (Someday I'll go back and actually graduate!)

Out in the real world, I should be going back to work soon...but I have no idea when, haven't gotten that phone call yet. Kinda like waiting for a bomb to go off. :P

Real world has pluses and minuses over college. I don't have to write essays any more for one and my work is worth money. On the down side I have bills and no amount of excellent work is going to grant me a scholarship to pay for those.

The 'ART' teacher I had in college was this literal stereotype of a hippie. And guess what he had us do? Photocopy stuff. EVERY CLASS... This was no art class it had no point to it. "Find an example of [art style]", Photocopy, done. It was so boring that I blew off the entire class and handed NOTHING in.

The entire semester that I went had a similar pattern, I'm not sure who's bright idea came up with this program but every class could be described as either I knew more than the students and kept correcting the teacher, or the coursework was so generic to be useless. Add insult to injury, the entire college ran off a 56K leased ine up till the end of the semester, making doing any 'work' at college useless, and the Windows 9X labs were full of viruses because their "IT" department wouldn't update the virus definitions. Their NT lab was better only by virtue it was locked down. But it only had IE 2.0 and netscape 4.0 on it (1998 here)

It was like... agggh poor timing. Way to ruin my impression of going to college being cool. I completely blew off the entire program and saw it for what it was. When you can challange the 'intro' courses and get an A on it, having not even read the material, you know you are wasting your time and money. When the students are asking YOU for help and not the teacher, you know you are wasting your time and money.

X_x I don't even mention it on my resume anymore. It's like some 5 month chunk of my life that could have better been spent doing something else.

Right now I've got two midterm papers to start researching. One in Poli Sci about a case study (I'm going to look into soldiers refusing to obey illegal orders) and the other in Criminal Justice about policy issues (I still haven't thought of a policy).

I'm also transitioning the entire Army ROTC Color Guard into new uniforms and restructuring our formal organization (including awards requirements).

I'm also being tasked with researching and organizing the permanent retiring of my unit's colors into a ceremony that will most likely draw press and flag officers (Generals) to be present.

I'm also being tasked with organizing the Color Guard teams for TWO formal events that will be happening at different locations on the same day.

Plus all my normal studying, ROTC duties, Reservist work, and showing up to my job.
