Been thinking...

Post by Zaechs »

Well, i have been on the Ghastly pages for a while now, well more like a week, if that. And I was seeing of the cool things he and the other artist, well comic gurus have been doing. It has inspired me to actully work on a comic. gasp, Lol. Could any have ever guessed a member of the board might do this... nah, no way... lol. Any way, I was looking to a get a bit of feed back on the concept, and and what of the whole thing. And if this is not the right forum, shoot me now, move the thread later, lol.

Basically, I am my buddies, we say, and do some really wierd schtick and I thought about what some of that stuff could actually do, and the character Dr. Colms, pronounced as Dr. Colmsu with a japanese accent (don't ask), as some wierd and completely random character based on myself, and all of those crazed anime characters that wear the glasses that others can't see through... ja, the comic is one giant anime satire... Not to mention the Giant Robots!

Yes, giant robots, mainly the Targetron t1200, the Meijercons, Krogerbots, and the MuyGrande Loco3000. Groups like the Wal-mart Talaban, so on and so forth... A hat that is like the second brain for the good doctor, the hero ... mild manored man by night, Tony Ja Mecha-Pilot Extraordinare by day.

And so it just keeps going on down the line with things like the Phunkai, not the Shikai, or the Bankai, no, the Punkai; giant robo battle; mops of holy smiting power (only against Krogerbots), and other random Gundam, DBZ, Hip Hop, and other such refferences through the the whole thing.

I will have more on the whole thing soon, just need to finish a few concept pieces for it, and I will post them...

I tried to read that, but then my brain warned me it would crawl out of my eyes and kick me in the testicles if I kept reading it, so I stopped.

Good luck with whatever it is you were going to be doing with japanese robots and some doctor.

...I can't understand a word you just said.

*rereads the post for the third time*

Oooh, okay. You're going to do an anime parody comic. Have fun with that. And, no offense, but you may wish to grammar check your comic when you write it. You'll be all the better for it.

I guess one advice to beginner is in order:

Good comics aren't made by copying good comics. What you get that way is just copies of good comics.
Good comics are made by finding something original that will make the comic different from other comics made on similar topics. Don't let Ghastly's comic, or any other comic, be your inspiration. Find inspiration in yourself.

Mm... anime satire.

Be warned, it's been done. A LOT. So try to make yours as unique as possible. That's what you'll need to strive for: being able to stand out in an over-saturated market.

Some tips:

-Look up some current anime parody comics (Ghastly's Ghastly is a good example, but there are others, too). Find good ones AND bad ones. Read them. Figure out what makes the good ones good, and the bad ones bad.

-Be careful about inserting injokes into your comic. It may be funny as all hell among your friends, but people not privy to it just find it annoying, and will be turned off by it.

-Read How Not to Run a Comic. 'Nuff said.

-Make sure your art style can cut it. It may be an anime parody, but that will be no excuse for sloppy art. Far too many funny comics make the mistake of assuming that art doesn't matter. This is not true. Humor should not carry crappy art, so put some effort into it.

-Beware of otaku-speak, unless you're making a point of it (Freddy in Ghastly's Ghastly Comic is an example of that). I noticed you slipped a "ja..." into your post. Try not to do that; it really annoys some people. Keep it in english, unless there's a reason for something to be in another language.

-Find someone reliable to grammar-check before you go live. Your forum post is a mess, and if the comic is the same way, I suspect most of the jokes and references will be lost in the confusion. Find a resident grammar nazi (sibling, roommate, second cousin twice-removed) and make good use of them, and work on honing your own language skills so as to better convey your thoughts.

-And of course, have fun with it! If you start losing interest, the readers can tell, so find ways to keep yourself motivated, and good luck.

It took me several tries to get through that post. I hit the "me and my buddies part" and then my eyes started to fly around in a panic, hitting word-groups like "giant robot" and "weird and completely random", which only contributed to said panic. Anyway, I gather your comic will be a fine piece of work; best of luck to you.

Anime parody comic, eh. Anime parody can be fun in small doses, but an entire comic based around it might not work so well. Also, like MM said, grammar and spelling = Doubleplus Good.

Also also, your sig is too big. Please change it before Mercury Hat destroys us all in a firey comet of rage, thanks.

The example I'll use would be RPG World. (still one of my favs) Anyway, IanJ, the creator, based the comic off of Final Fantasy parodies, and he was really successful with that too, but eventually, he had to move on, cuz there were only so many things in the series to parody.

So, you can parody anime in your comic, but use moderation, spread it out over the whole comic or something, that way, it can be a recurring joke, and won't be played out by the first few pages.

And yes, bookmark the How Not to Run a Webcomic site that Sparrow suggested. It's really useful with writing webcomics, made by fellow CGers and such.

Actually it was "I am my buddies."
Took me a while to get past that part.

For Zaechs' sake: I addition to what others have already said I hope the text in your comic will be more readable than the text in your sig banner.

Huh, so it does. I must have mentally edited it. Maybe I even dreamed up the giant robots.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that's not the reason he moved on. :shifty: Maybe that's why he was going to end it, but he stopped updating before the comic actually finished, so I suspect that either he became disollusioned with the comic (or, I've heard, the fans?), or real life caught up with him.

Ack, I should have worded that better. I didn't mean "move on" as in drop the comic and look into other projects. I meant "move on" as in move on from the gag a day jokes based on Final Fantasy, like the save points, and healing in hotels after sleeping, etc...

Unfortunately, when low on sleep, having the graveyard shift, my grammar, spelling, and over all typing ability slips, beyond all bonds.

I do understand that much of the comic process, I double check any work that I do for the D&D games I play online, or even basic material I hand out to friends, that won't be a problem for me.

The whole writing style in the post... poor side rant that I do from time to time in even more basic writing like this. I get lost in thought and ramble on. Much like a Stream of Consiousness style that I take up when I get excited as well.

All in all, I will more than likely be posting more, and since most of the events won't even be taking place around the main character, more like because of him, I am not sure how it will go, and hence why I will shortly be posting some things here. Just for an open audiance thought on it.

I won't be doing any part of the story's plot, more like shorts for days, or rather weeks when I cannot get the page up, lol. But will have something rather soon, I hope...
