Politics of Superheroes! (Just for fun, I swear)

Post by RemusShepherd »

Check out this excellent blog post. One example:

GREEN LANTERN – REPUBLICAN

The squarest superhero in the DC Universe (and that’s saying a lot), Green Lantern is also one of the most conservative. A former test pilot and current galactic police officer, Green Lantern has always been a running dog for The Man. Dude carries a WMD on his ring finger and flies around reshaping reality according to his idea of The Way Things Should Be. Total neocon. (I am so getting hate email for this.)

While you're laughing at that, what are your characters' political leanings?

I'd be hard-pressed to find a republican in my 'hero' team...Debbie's the closest, as a libertarian. Skeeter's a total freakin' anarchist. Wirebound and Orbstar are pretty centrist, but it gets scarier from there...and I shouldn't bring up my villains...

well, tom is politically neutral. if any, his philosophy would probably be "nuke em"

Molly is a democrat, but she has communist leanings.

The cockroach is libertarian. don't ask.

I love Dave's Long Box. I just gotta argue about his assertion that Superman is a republican- he's a FDR democrat.

The way I depict myself in G'nerds2000, I seem very Liberal, but thats just because I'm defending video games from... well, republicans every now and then. I'm actualy pretty moderate.

Sorta chicken is from the Free Soil party.

In Deep Dive (on hiatus) Levaant would be a leftist moderate I guess. Seraph would be very right if not for the philanthropy. Nameless and Child are both from the Know Nothing Party.

My Mom sent me that link yesterday. ^_~ While I'd tend to agree that Wonder Woman is on the left, I wouldn't call her a socialist.

As for my comic, I think it's fairly obvious Carter's conservative, otherwise I don't really intend to have my characters speak their political affiliation; I don't want to let politics make my fans not like the comic (albeit we'll be getting into the topic of a biased media during this current storyline. ^_~)

Dave's Longbox is always good for a chuckle...him picking apart horrible early 90s comics is always hilarious.

As for the political leanings of my characters, I have no earthly idea...never thought about it.

Since my comic is based on my family, I'd say that they're on the more moderate side of conservatism. Except my sister, who, thanks to the crazy bible program she's on, is now a whacko far-right conservative.

Steve is a liberal, and Bart Farkas is a fasc1st.

My characters are all communists, like any good RPG party. Come on, one guy controls all the characters, finances, and equipment and distributes the supplies according to need? Total communism.

I've had this joke planned for a while, and it just so happens that it comes out here before it goes in the comic.

Hmmm. Good one. If I had to say.

Pooky- Apolitical. Pooky is too much of a cynic to even care about politics. While Pooky sees what's wrong with the world there's this overwhelming feeling that nothing can change it, and it's best just to live as far apart from politics as possible.

Penelope- Peace and Love Hippie. She's the truest hippie. She may be pink but she's not a pinko commie. She believes charity should be something everyone gives freely, not something that's forced, People and rabbits should get along and love one another and that a rabbit lives to help others.
Actually in that regard as a Hippie she's better at being what we Christians should be.

Hannibal- Constitution party (yes it's a real party. Check your local ballots) Hannibal doesn't much show his political leanings since he'd rather go out and do things for himself rather than wait for the government to tell him what to do. He believes in the basic ideals of the founding fathers without all the political posturing that goes on today.

Juju-Nihilist Anarchist Juju is evil, but she's so cute. But ultimately she wants to see all order collapse and the world fall into utter chaos.

Euclid-Yuppie Democrat. Get a job? NOOOOO! he cries. Euclid could be described as calm and easy going or just plain lazy. Why do for himself when others can do for him?

Mors-Lincoln era republican. He's definitely all about freeing the oppressed through any means necessary.

Yeah I think I'll just keep my comic away from politics.

* THE HULK – LIBERTARIAN

“Hulk just want to be left alone.”
I thought that was pretty awesome. :P

I'd play too, but I don't have a (currently running) comic.

From left to right, with the character's defining philosophy...

Lord Elf, archliberal. Believes that enough good governing will make everything better.

Herman/April, college liberal. Thinks Noam Chomsky has very interesting ideas. Is collecting bumper stickers to cover entire rear window of the hybrid she's going to get.

Megan, Joe Lieberman liberal. Is absolutely terrified of what will happen when her friends find out what she really thinks.

Nimoy, neo-con. Actually knows what a neo-con is.

M'Lady, leans liberal. She likes puppies and children and flowers and smiling.

Goku, leans liberal. Goku is the innocence and enthusiasm of youth.

The Goths, non-liberal Democrats. They want the status and power of artificial victimhood.

Geoph, moderate. Sick of being treated like a victim and pandered to.

Ben and the Vaders, unknown. I guess Lucas would call them Republicans or something? Right before writing in a scene where Ewoks frustrate some Stormtroopers by comically running back and forth across a hall lined with doors while Scooby Doo music plays?

Woot, evasively non-political. "I will support whichever party will kill Kevin Federline. Ha ha ha! No, seriously."

Sweet_grrl, doesn't realize that she's not really very liberal at all. Gets her marching orders from songs on the radio.

SysOp, conservative. Not that he's ever showing up in the comic again, but he was The Man.

Duke, South Park conservative. America...Fuck Yeah!

LoD, libertine. Not to be confused with a libertarian. He wants to do whatever he pleases, and one of those things is hurting people.

Lilit, egoist. Machiavellian, even.

Hambonetaru-chan, conservative capitalist. He promises that you'll like his product so much that he won't let you return it.

Barbivine Thunderjugs, theocon. "My God is coming, and he will kill Kevin Federline. Ha ha ha! No, seriously."

Most of LWK characters are pro-Alfonso VI. Some of them, though, disagree with his diplomatic approach but still support expansion of Castilla and Leon. Simon is currently in Navara so he hopes that Castilla won't go in that direction, not till he is there. Malena is supposed to vouch for Sancho of Aragon, but currently she can't care less. El Cid has stepped into service of Zaragoza, so currently that's his political preferation. :P

From Western University, my one superhero story:

Doug is normally a Liberal, but has little faith in the current LPoC. He'll probably vote NDP in the next election. He sees this as the only rational decision, since the NDPs more closely match his views than any other party... even if they have no real chance of getting into office. Doug usually believes that his opinions are the only rational ones to take.

Susan is mostly a centrist, but holds a personal grudge against prime minister Stephen Harper for the remarks he made about Atlantic Canada. She will likely register and vote for the Liberals in the next federal election, just to try and get the Conservatives out of power. She has no party affiliation.

Marc isn't a separatist, but has voted for the Bloc Quebecois in the past because he liked the candidate they had in his riding. Mostly he's a economically conservative, socially liberal, all-round cynic. He doesn't like any of the three big national parties; the Liberals are corrupt, the NDP don't know how to run a government, and the Conservatives have come out against gay marriage. Marc and Doug have long heated debates about politics; Doug always has to be right, and Marc just likes pushing his buttons.

The remaining three characters are just now coming of voting age. None of them are particularly nuanced in their politics.

Chas is a social conservative. He hopes that gay marriage is overturned in Canada; as far as he knows he has never personally met a gay person, and is likely to be shocked when he discovers that he has. He supports the Conservative party but isn't particularly well informed about what they stand for, other than the fact that they have the word "conservative" in their name.

Cassie isn't interested in politics. It lies outside her sphere of awareness.

Natasha hasn't formed any strong political leanings. She doesn't like the confrontation and power struggle inherent in the political process. If Jim North were to introduce her to anarchism she would probably like the idea very much.

It's kind of amusing how US politics compare to, say, Swedish politics.

The most right wing party in Swedish parliament (and the current ruling party in government, leaders of the majority Alliance within the parliament), the moderates, are somewhere to the left of US Liberals.
Then we have (from right to left) the peoples party, the christian democrats, the center party, the green party (which refuses to be assigned a value on the left/right scale), the social democrats (former ruling party) and the left party.

Yeah, there's small parties outside parliament who are further to the right, but they are all anti-immigration or nationalist or outright racist or neonazi parties. The number of small radical left wing parties is larger still, but they are smaller in scale and far less likely to actually win any elections, whereas some of the more popular right wingers actually get into county and municipal governments.

Then there's the cross political parties and the issue parties (june list (cross party-EU policy revisionists), FI (feminist initiative) and PP (pirate party, non-aligned issue party), the three largest parties outside parliament).

And it's all way, way, way left of anyone in US government, congress or senate.

As we say in Northern California, "Hella" funny article, there.

And, well, for politics, I'm not quite sure as to where Wendy leans. It's a science comic, not a character-based one; it'd be about as meaningful as politically classifying ABOL. But since it's about environmental science, probably she'd be moderate-to-strong environmentalism, but politically apathetic otherwise. She's far too nice to liberate test animals or set fires to SUV dealerships, but she does have a "thing" about, say, global warming deniers.

My main characters are kids, but I'd have to say they'd go Republican, because conservatives are more likely to be for the death penalty for pedophiles, whereas liberals would rather treat them...
