Milk in cardboard long-life boxes...that's been around since cocky was an egg. Bet most of you lot didn't know the fridge is an Australian invention either, eh?
Who else but us would invent something like that? We need to keep the beer cold.
(Yes, I know it was patented somewhere else as a whitegood, but our bushies invented it first out of damp canvas sacks hanging from a tree)

I live in a country where some people eat dog. I come from an island where some people club baby seals, so I guess I don't have any right to comment. Actually we don't club baby seals any more... just adolescent seals.Kisai wrote:I think the only culture shock type of thing to me would be going to another country that eats animals that we keep as pets here (cats and dogs mainly)

They weren't serving me no omelettes or steak!Mercury Hat wrote:You're just crazy, Sortelli. French foods tend to be a little more undercooked than Americans like it: Omelettes are a little runny and meats are a bit rarer, but they taste great. I haven't had steak tartare (the meat's pretty much flat out rare), but I'd like to try it.

mmmmm I love cranberry sause. I can eat it straight from the can, by itself. yummy.
I saw someone on a show the other day eating cold fried chicken on a waffle for breakfast. Is that some kind of a southern thing? first off, cold chicken for breakfast? and then it's on a waffle?! Waffles are for maple syrup or caramel and other various sweet toppings.

Chesse with cranberry sauce? Cranberry sauce goes on turkey. Cheese sometimes goes on pie though.mcDuffies wrote:Here's what I wonder:
How comes you Americans eat pork with apple sauce and cheese with crannbery sauce? Wth? Apple sauce and crannberry sauce are sweet! Main course is not supposed to be sweet!
As for eating sweet stuff with main courses like that...it generally just specific combinations. Apple sauce with ham or pork chops, cranberries with turkey. Otherwise it's not a common thing. I think most people just eat it because it's tradition and it's the way we've had it since kids. Most people wouldn't do it with other combinations...is someone came up and said "say, have this Jello on you steak" or "put this jam on your chicken" they'd think you were crazy.

Cold chicken is great! Roast chicken or just cooked chicken flesh. I can go through a bag of the stuff if it's available! Not sure about the waffles though...
Also, cold pizza is the best breakfast in the entire world. The only problem is to get cold pizza in the morning you can't eat it all for dinner the night before.

And yes, day old pizza is great...it needs to age like a fine wine.

I rarely eat applesauce, and don't know why it's often served with pork. I like my pork without applesauce, and my applesauce with cinnamon as a dessert.
I have never in my life eaten, or even heard of, cheese with cranberry sauce. And I try to eat some of EVERYTHING. I love cheese, either melted as a thin layer on just about anything, or raw. I do not like cranberry sauce anymore, but remember loving it as a kid.
I would not drink warm milk. I've had warm milk. I simply really, really like my beverages to be ice cold.
I've eaten dog, and I've eaten cat. I see nothing wrong with eating these animals. Both can be quite tasty. I have not eaten seal, but would do so in a heartbeat.
What I find odd is that 80% of the world population has insects as a part of their diet, but here in the US they're so "icky and gross" that we make reality shows that include forcing people to consume them.
Now, how do the French make an art out of eating rotten stuff? Cheese that has turned into juice? Bread with maggots? Ew.

The regional specialties of any country are always what the peasants were forced to eat because they had no real food. Frogs legs, snails, tacos, caviar, pasta, McDonalds, Vegemite, meat pies...rkolter wrote:Now, how do the French make an art out of eating rotten stuff? Cheese that has turned into juice? Great thread idea!
Mr. Bob, What is UHT?
I love milk, but can't drink it unless it's cold enough to bring on braini-freeze.
I have seen the boxed milk over here, but it isn't very popular.
Never heard of cheese and cranberry sauce either. I don't think it sounds very good. I think of Cranberry sauce as "holiday" food.
I love pork chops and apple sauce, too.. but I like pork chops with crushed pineapple MUCH better.
There are a lot of regional differences over here (as I'm sure there are there).. for instance, when someone above said cheese goes on "pie"... I thought *ewwww gross!* because where I come from "Pie" = sweet treat. Unless you specifically say "pot pie"... which doesn't usually have chees on it either. It wasn't until I got to college that I realized when people from other parts of the country say "pie", they mean pizza.
I have a question that is sparked from a conversation I had recently... what do non-Americans call what WE call biscuits? My friend in the UK calls cookies "biscuits" ...when I asked her, she said "scones" were probably the closest thing. But scones are sweet, right?

The only probelm I have with dog and cat is that in alot of places it considered that the more pain its in when the animal dies, the better the meat.I've eaten dog, and I've eaten cat. Same reason I don't like the idea of Veal or Lobster. I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with it, its just me.

It's the opposite - hunters go for a quick kill so that you do not get the hormones and other chemicals from the spleen, which will compress to give the animal some time to survive.Aiken wrote:The only probelm I have with dog and cat is that in alot of places it considered that the more pain its in when the animal dies, the better the meat.I've eaten dog, and I've eaten cat. Quick kill = better meat.
As for lobsters... I like them too much to care that they die by boiling.
And veal? I tried it to say I had, but agree with you - I've seen how they "make" veal - break a calves legs, and chain it's mouth to a trough until it has to eat to breathe. Put it in a box so it can't move.
Ick.

Cheese can go on pie (and not pizza pie). I've had cheese danishes and stuff too, they rule.
I've had pork chops with applesauce, it isn't bad. But I prefer it with some sort of barbeque sauce instead - save the applesauce for a snack.
And cold pizza is icky.
Cold chicken is extra good though, especially as a sandwich.
Dammit now I'm hungry.
