One of those obnoxious Indie-film people...

Post by Nanda »

Looking at the 5-step film education thread served to remind me that I'm really a very fussy movie fan, and that most of the films I really like can't be found in Blockbuster Video, or seen at the local cineplex - I spend a lot of my time in arthouses and watching IFC. In fact, in the last five movies I saw were The Seventh Seal, The Science of Sleep, Little Miss Sunshine,The Confederatre States of America, and A Scanner Darkly. I was just wondering if anyone else preferred that sort of thing - Indie Films, Foreign Films, Art Films - and if so, what are your favorites?

There's an entire world out there that isn't America or Japan, however, and I was hoping to hear from some of those people.

I'm not sure that I like indie, per se...but I sure like off beat films. See, I'm not sure how one draws a distinction, since a lot of indie films seem to get support from corperate 'indie' funding, ya know? But I likes what I likes, anyhow. ^_^ If some of these aren't considered indie, please forgive my ignorance...but they're off beat enough to count for me. And some are foreign, anyhow.

Mirrormask (squeeee!)
City of Lost Children (American movies never have characters so phisically intriguing...they're living charactures of themselves!)
Gormenghast (okay, it's a BBC miniseries...still not something you see often!)
The Gamers

Oh, speaking of foreign films- if you want an interesting film, try Before the Rain. It's about religious tentions and violence in Macedonia. It's done in a format similar to Pulp Fiction, but with the complete opposite goal- it demonstrates the horrors of violence rather than reveling in it as entertainment. They're very interesting to compare.

Er...animal lovers may have a few problems with one bit. I know I do.

Oooh, I liked Mirrormask, too. One of my favorite foreign films is "La Ciudad," but it's really tough to find.

There's obscure indie anime out there too, you know.

But yeah, I like foreign and indie films, and IFC is one of my two favorite movie channels. But I don't really spend enough time watching movies or searching out interesting ones to come up with a much. Off the top of my head 'though, I enjoyed City of God and Nine Iron. Although, unfortunately, I never got to see the end of Nine Iron. (Darn class!)

Only bad thing about foreign films: you can't watch them while drawing. (Unless you speak the language, I guess.)

Recently I saw Volver, which was from Spain. And a lot of my film history background was from around the world; Japan, Cuba, England, Italy, Russia, Germany, and others.

There actually is genuine cinema from Japan that isn't anime, goddamnit. "Daremo Shiranai", etc.

What? Don't be daft. "Foreign" means "non-American".

I don't mind indie films, but Beth likes them more than I do.

Wild Strawberets. And everything is in black and white. With English subtitles.

I will say, the indie movies I HAVE <strike>volunteered</strike> been dragged kicking and screaming to see have on the whole been pretty good, and reasonably thought provoking, whether I agreed with the premise or not.

That said, I hate, and I mean HATE, to pay cinema prices for any movie that does not have special effects that you really need a cinema sized screen to see. I haven't seen an indie film yet that meets my parameters for "worthy of $8 apiece to see it".

Agreed (though it's $10.50 here.) I usually only go if it's one of those big movies you need to see big, or if it's really one I just can't wait to see (rare.)

Personally I really don't care--if it's a movie I like, then I like it, and it doesn't matter where it came from, be it the Hollywood Machine or somebody's home production. The last indy film I saw was Brick, which was fantastic.

Any Bollywood fans? :P

I don't watch a lot of foreign films, but I have a thing for cult films like Donnie Darko, and sometimes MST3K episodes are from other countries.

Like Godzilla vs. Megatron, which was worth watching for the ridiculous Jet Jaguar song alone..
