We've had threads like this before, and every time GotF is mentioned, I feel duty bound to note that this is the most depressing movie in existence. It turns new mothers' milk sour and makes goths look for high ledges. Before watching it make sure there are no pills, pistols, or razor blades in your house, and that your walls are thick enough that your neighbors will not hear you bawling like a little baby. It's a beautiful work of art, but whoa.

I agree with much that has been mentioned. My favorites are Cowboy Bebop, Paranoia Agent, and FMA. Trigun is watchable but not very accessible to western tastes.

Grave of the fireflies made me cry a great deal, and it made me want to do something that would be stupid to mention, because it may get me in trouble, but I would never do it, so people here would have an idea what it would be like if that happend here.

In retrospect, it'd be better just to make our Nations' leaders all watch this movie.

Yes, we do. It's how we appear edgey in today's world. And now I have to kill you all for stumbling upon our secret.

That said, Hellsing is a good anime *and* manga, though they're both insanely gorey. :) And the manga has a fair amount of nudity, at least later on. Probably not the best choice if your father is a pastor...

Trigun, FMA, anything by Miyazaki will probably be all right. Also, if you can find the old Galaxy Express 999 movies, I *highly* recommend those.

Yeah I read a few of the Galaxy 999 Mang4 I got from the library. Not really to my tastes, I'm not into the art style. Y'know the whole "Astro boy crossed with shoujo" thing kinda put me off.
Anyway, the pastor has just informed me that P2P stuff not allowed.

$#!^$#@#&%$&%*&^%*^(%(*%&#$&(%)*$)&%)*&%+_%^)%!!!!!!!
(read: I loves fuzzy kittens!)

Anyway, are there any alternatives? I managed to find the first episodes of both Trigun and Samurai Champloo on Google video (both of which were very cool! XD ) but I can't find any other episodes...

If you're looking for episodes for free, there really isn't any legal way of getting them.

DVD is prettymuch the only option at this point.

Well, not now, but July 17th, Toonami Jetstream goes up. Free anime for broadband.

And for stuff released in the U.S. might I recommend Netflix?

And as an alternative to netflix, might I offer smashing your facew in with a hammer?

There's You Tube, and there's harrassing your local video store. For the stuff I buy, I shop around online, you can ussually find stuff pretty cheap.

I want to say something about this so badly, but I won't :P

Anyway, I don't think it's been mentioned yet, but my favorite anime is Outlaw Star. Some gunplay, a lot of space combat, and for nudity, Melfina has to strip down to immerse herself in the tube where she controls the ship's functions, but you don't see anything anyway. If you're that worried about seeing boobies though, avoid episode 25, which is basically a full episode of fanservice.

Also, don't watch Gundam Seed. It's crap and it'll rot your brain. Go rent the original Mobile Suit Gundam, and then Gundam 0080 and maybe 0083. Oh, and 08th MS Team. Universal Century ftw.

Other quick picks are Galaxy Express 999 (movie), Gun Frontier, Nuku Nuku (Original OAV), and Invader Zim (Not anime, who gives a rat's hinder?)*

*Please note that one or more of these may contrain the dreaded BEWBS. Watch at your own risk.

Nuku Nuku is MY savior.
Either her, Batman, or Kaworu at least.

Kaworu died for your and my sins, you know...

Karoru may have died for your sins, but Nuku Nuku beat up giant robots and ate fish for mine.

yeah, but the first Full Metal Panic one before that. Warning, there are about three clips of nudity throughout the entire series.
It also has a "third" season "full metal panic: TSR" which I also enjoyed.

uhhh. the Nana anime is good, if you're into girly things :) Same with AIR and Kanon, but you'll get a few people who are outspokenly against one or both of those. I enjoyed them though. :S

Tokyo Underground is nice... but for some reason I don't remember ever finishing it.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (another Studio Gihbly one (I just butchered that spelling)
Gunslinger Girl <3
Noir
Spiral the Blade Children is clean fun, but the ending's kinda incompleteish
Tsukiyomi Moon Phase
Rozen Maiden - both series
Scrapped Princess (I REALLY loved this one)

That's the most immediate bunch I can think of.

Unfortunately, he said that the minister said no P2P downloading, and I'm assuming that includes bit torrent, so fansubs are out.

Although, I downloaded all of Air, but have yet to watch it, and I'm downloading Rozen Maiden now...

At first I hated AIR, but after a second watching, I've warmed up to it. Of course, that view may be skewed because we watched AIR in anime club right after Loveless :( :( :( .

The lesson here is Loveless makes any anime look like gold.

YouTube.com is a good place to find anime, but don't count on it as an absolutely sure thing. I'm also not *entirely* sure of the legality involved, but I don't think it qualifies as P2P...

Why do we even have that Keenime forum anymore? Nobody ever posts there, and posts about anime are more likely to get responses here in Off-Topic...

Isn't your anime club the same one that decided to watch Descendents of Darkness? Someone there must be a BL fan, which always sucks. -_- I hate shounen-ai-type anime and manga ... not because I'm opposed to manlove or anything, it's just that the plot and characters are always shoddy and shallow excuses for manlove with poor animation to boot. Anyway, long story short, Loveless was stupid.

Um ... Don't watch anything based on the works of Yu Watase; I had that fluffy crap shoved down my throat in both anime and manga form at high-school anime clubs. Nor anything based on a video game - like their movie counterparts, video game anime series suck.

Now, as for anime that doesn't suck... Not all of these are sci-fi, but they are all good in my rather humble opinion.

-Planetes (Excellent hard sci-fi; I didn't like the ending of the anime as much as I liked the manga version, though. I don't much like Tanabe, so the fact that she got a lot more focus was irksome at times, and the last bit seemed rather contrived in places. Nevertheless, it was a good series. I wish someone would license the 'Vinland Saga' manga, incidentally.)

-The Twelve Kingdoms (Girl-is-transported-to-another-world anime that is actually done right. I wish the series had a good conclusion, though -- it just kind of fizzles out, even though there's supposedly more source material -- novels -- to adapt.)

-Gankutsuou - The Count of Monte Cristo (Sci-fi-ish again. It will always stand out in my mind as the first Gonzo series I watched that actually didn't suck completely by the end - although it still wasn't perfect by any means, as it drifted further and further from the source material. But I still liked it, and you should at least watch a few episodes for the crazy visuals.)

-Kino's Journey (An episodic show in which a young wanderer and a talking motorbike visit different countries and learn various Philosophical Lessons. Kind of hit-and-miss: some people ... well, a lot of people ... find it slow.)

-Serial Experiments Lain, Boogiepop Phantom, and Paranoia Agent kind of go together - if you like one of them, you'll probably like them all. Weird mystery/psychological/philosophical-type series.

Oh, and I haven't seen any episodes of Monster, but I love the manga, and I hear the anime is pretty faithful to it...

Series that I like but can't recommend to everyone on account of things like lacklustre visuals or really girly themes would be Fantastic Children and Victorian Romance Emma (the manga comes out in North America in September, I hear...). ;>_>

Indeed.

Oh, and anything related to the Ghost in the Shell franchise may be right up your alley, although it tends to suffer from Talking Heads Syndrome. ...And the no-nudity thing might be an issue.
