I do have a Garfield book that is funny. The three main jokes are only used a couple of times and there are (wait for it...) Actual jokes that are funny. other than that... It sucks. But itd still not as bad a Marmaduke.PeppermintAfterlife wrote:I still like reading my old Garfield books. Those were funny back in the day.
I'm glad 90's style forum signatures don't exist anymore.

This may surprise you - but Garfield is still funny, you're simply bored of it.
Anyone reading Garfield for the first time will enjoy it.
I mean, how many people actually read Garfield as a kid?
And I don't mean in a collected book kind of "read" - I mean in a "my fingers are black from this stupid newspaper" kind of "read".
What annoys me is people chanting "Garfield sucks", because among them there's only like one person who actually read it and now hates it. Everyone else simply took the first opinion they heard and ran with it only casually glancing at strips in order to reaffirm their belief that it sucks.
Damn it all to hell - I've been reading too much shiz on psychology.

I'm not surprised. I know full well that if I had never laid eyes on a single Garfield strip and read it in the paper, I'd like it. I mean, there's a reason it's so popular. I have grown a little bored of it, but as old fans stop reading, lots of other new ones pick it up, particularly children. Jim Davis created the strip to be profitable (remember his other failed ideas before Garfield?), and he certainly has achieved it. His intent was never to make sometihng personal or profound.

It's like the cycle Marvel goes through, (and probably DC, but I don't look into DC too much.) Every ten or so years, they release another comic about a hero that already has a comic out, re-doing the whole story over again for a new generation.
Just take Amazing Spider-man for instance, that comic is now way into the hundreds, and hard for a new reader to get into, and the readers of it from the first few that came out have probably seen all the storylines before, all the villians, so it gets boring, so they drop it from their reading list.
Then Ultimate Spider-man comes out to introduce the character to a new generation, people that have never read Amazing Spider-man can get into Ultimate Spider-man easier as it starts from the beginning, drawing in the readers. Also, with the coupling of the Spider-man movies...
I hope I explained myself clearly, I'm really bad at explaining things.
