He didn't say it was a salary, he said they didn't need it, reward or otherwise.
Really, what would they do with it? Spend it on stuff? But that would stimulate the economy which would help people and since when have mad scientists been all about helping people?

well maybe at some point they'll want to start a college fund for their kids (the next generation of mad scientists), or maybe they want to retire and open up a small business. maybe they want to buy their own island, or start a private army (got to pay the soldiers salaries somehow). Cryogenic freezing still costs a pretty penny these days

Forcibly take over a building, steal resources, use mad science already developed to make product.
maybe they want to buy their own island,
Conquer an existing island or make their own.

Pay them in not-killing-them-outright.

I work for a week, I get a paycheck at the end of that week, I get the check cashed, I take it to go buy the components needed to make a gold robot, I make a gold robot.
Or.
I steal the components needed to make a gold robot and I make a gold robot.
Which is easier, neh?

No, I wouldn't be one of the 1 thru 10 Führers, I would be "Teh Führer of FascistSpace".
The reason for 1 thru 10 sib-Führers is so they can act as an arm of the FascistSpace ideology. I mean, me plus sub-Führers 1 thru 9 couldn't possibly contain the masses of CG, but a 10th sub-Führer could rule all that we could see of the CG world. We'd be indivisable!!
And it would be a rolling list of Führers. Say if sub-Führer 4 got shot, than every sub-Führer under him/her would move up a rank and a new sub-Führer 10 would be elected. Also, if I wasn't able to fufil my duties as "Teh Führer of FacistSpace", than sub-Führer 1 takes over and the rest of the sub-Führers also move upwards.
So, all I have to do is elect 10 sub-Führers, and on election day, every elegable CG voter would elect FasistSpace, or eat lead.
Would you like to be sub-Führer 1?
You're just trying to build a buffer so when the assassinations come rolling around, they'll start at the bottom and work their way up.
