I'm really not any kind of expert on Christianity, but if it makes people happy I don't see the problem in them picking and choosing what they want to believe in. Homosexuality, divorce, whatever! I think it's lovely that people are able to personalise their beliefs to suit themselves.

It may be a 'God's Will' kind of situation where those books were selected to teach the congregations of the future, and the others were rejected. I figure that would be the religious argument in that situation.

And now that we've moved beyond statistics, I'm going to run from this conversation for fear of contaminatin' y'all. :D

You know, I bet a real scientist would be able to spell "empirical".

Have you ever actually read any scientific reports? You'd be surprised how poorly otherwise intelligent people spell.

I can attest to that. Being both a scientist and a bad speller, and being surrounded by scientists who are bad spellers.

That's why every scientist should have a dopey little English major standing in, to catch errors like that.

Except... we can't spell either. Hm...

Better yet, use spellcheck.

The primary source of development of the language is not the lack of language fascists, but the fact that everyone but language fascists tends not to care all that much about spelling and grammar as long as they get their message through with a semblance of success.

I still retain my right to nitpick about the proper spelling and pronunciation of aluminium, however.

My philosophy (as has been stated before) is that I'm an english major and once I get my english degree I have every right, nay even a duty, to do whatever I want with the enlish langauge. Grammar, spelling, pronounciation, it's all subservient to me! I AM THE DARK LORD OF ENGLISH!
NJ is also Orion's fiance of sexy passion with the love of a thousand sea monkeys

You forgot wordsmithing. That's when you make up a word to fit the current situation, and manage to pass it off as real. I find that the most fun part.

You picked a losing horse, Czar. Aluminium is one of the recognized, noted, 'has-a-different-spelling/pronunciation-in-America-than-in-the-rest-of-the-world' dialect words.

Kind of stupid to have that for a scientific element, but eh. Whatareyougonnado?

You stole my message.

Specifically,

aluminium: al-u-min-e-um (England)
aluminum: ah-lu-min-um (US)

Ours is easier to say, but yours ends in the "e-um" sound that a lot of metals end with, and that just sounds cooler.

I pronounce it the British way. That's mostly because one of my roommates was a pretentious wiener.
