Ever heard the phrase "Content rating may change with online connectivity"?
It's the ultimate disclaimer. It means the game isn't responsible for foul-mouthed and foul-minded idiots you might run into over the magical interweb.

"My little Jimmy was playing this game, and I thought it was all right until he got to the space part and found this planet... (sob) full of dangerously proportioned female humanoids... in cities of towering, rudely shaped, spires."
That's what the ability to nuke a planet is for.

Who makes this game?
I have never wanted a game so badly in my entire life.
No, wait. That isn't emphasis enough.
I have NEVER WANTED A GAME THIS BADLY before.
My god. I'd pay almost any price.
I'm totally wired for this game. I'd take vacation time to play it and sell possessions to own it.
Why don't I have it, right now?
*sob*

You can create bizarre new lifeforms, nuke planets, build up unique cultures, interact with civilizations created by other players, nuke planets, terraform worlds... Wow! It jut goes on and on, and keeps getting better!
And you can
NUKE PLANETS!!! Oh, the power!

No, don't you get it?
You start with single cellular life. You build an entire species from scratch and it evolves. And the world evolves along with you. And then you have an animal and it evolves more. until it's intelligent. And then it evolves more. Until it takes over. And then it evolves more... and then you can visit not just other planets, but other planets that have also evolved, and have become intelligent and interact with them. And you can start new civilizations, and they too will evolve. nuke planets? Man, this is a simulation of the whole goddamn universe. Well.. galaxy.
It's scope, in time, space, and complexity... I'm not kidding. I would drop a thousand dollars for this game, tonight. I'd give up my comic for this game. I'd give up gemstones for this game.
... I want this game. I actually feel an ache inside that I don't have it right this very minute. I've never geek-gasmed this hard before.

And then you NUKE THEIR PLANETS!
People like me are one of the answers to the Fermi Paradox. That and percolation theory.

You've been able to nuke planets since Masters of Orion II. Bah.

MOO2 rocks. Me and a friend have set up a two-computer Win98 network so we can play cooperatively.

Anyone else going to build a species after something/someone in their comic?
Or at least build a 20-foot statue of one in their city?

Spore won't have this issue I don't believe. You don't actually interact with other players online. The file for each species (even in a fully advanced evolved form) is on the manner of kilobytes. The reason that you download other users content is purely to have a larger pool of creatures to populate the universe. Since the small filesize the game will be prepackage will potentially thousands to begin with (maybe more my filesize math is fuzzy right now). But a universe that is populated with a limited amount of creatures is basically against the spirit of the game he wants to make. So by downloading all the creatures everyone else has made you can see a universe that itself evolves as time goes on depending on what creatures users make. However, you don't talk to these people. I mean imagine if you are just making your cities when some alien comes and nukes your planet. No freaking way they'd allow that. The worse we'll have to deal with are creatures that are phallic or that other word for female like.
Edit:
I also imagine a planet inhabited by McDuffies who pit themselves against the vicious Mr. Bobians.

You could probably make a creature that looks like a hefty chested woman.
I would certainly hope so...

While I don't really go "gamer geek" very often, I do have the capacity in me. That video outed me big time! I'm nearly just as excited about this as Mr. Kolter, (except, I think I can control my urges until the fall release date) and for the same reasons. Yes, nuking planets is FABULOUS, but the thought of evolving from a single-celled lifeform, and scrapping my way up through the muck to a point where I have developed a species to a point in evolution in which it might have the technological ability to find and nuke extra-solar bodies if I so choose is far too intriguing to ignore. Hell, I'm sad that I hadn't really heard of it before this morning. I was counting the seconds as they ticked off the video, because he was still talking up to the cut off point, so now I'm
loading the entire lecture just so I don't miss anything! (It's a doozy, at over an hour long.) Put simply this game is what the simulation/strategy gamer in me has been waiting for since I discovered Sid Meier's Civilization on an old Mac, or came across a copy of Ascendency in a warehouse electronics sale. I only hope to goodness it's as open-ended as Mr. Wright is touting it to be. Given the man's brilliant track record, I do have faith! Kolter's right, the scope to this is astounding, and I can't wait to try it out!

Just as an aside, watching the complete lecture is totally worth it, if only for Mr. Wright's Care Bear tangent, about 25 minutes through. I've always liked Will Wright, but the mere fact that he has taken the time to learn and speak on the subject of Care Bears, in the same "interesting bit of trivia!" way that I do with various children's fare, just endears me to the man that much more!

I'm gonna go with the crowd on this and say:
Waaaaaaaaant!
But then, I also wonder how demanding this is going to be, since my system is rather limited both in terms of ability and potential (upgrades).

Man, with the way people are reacting to this game, I almost believe we're going to hear about a rise in people giving handjobs in alleys for nickels just to save up for it.

I'll have you know my desperation handjobs are worth at least dimes.

this game may lead to the downfall of modern civilization. people will stop caring about their lives and devote themselves to playing. life savings will dry up, families will desintigrate, infrastructure will break down, and it will rain hellfire. what have you done Will Wright?!

It's the following day now.
I still want this game.
For me, a good meter to determine if I am upset about something or really excited about something is to see if the following day after a good night's sleep I am still upset or excited.
I'm going to go download that whole lecture. I've already joined the newsletter and bookmarked the site.
