The Drama over 46 cents

We order some things from JC Penney's on giftcards awhile back. Today I got a email and a phone call demanding I pay the 46 cents that my total went over.
Yes,
46 cents
I find this absolutely hilarious. So I call up and try to put the 46 cents on my credit card. I told the rep that this hilarious how they are making a big deal of 46 cents. She told me she's seen them do this over a penny.
a penny. Ok, trying not to laugh, I tell her I'll put it on my credit card. She tend tells me she can only take payment with another giftcard (which we don't have) or I have to pay the entire amount in full using my credit card (which I won't do). Now guess what I have to do?
Drive 30 miles to the mall that does have a JC Penney's to pay 46 cents to make sure my order is not canceled in 10 days.
Hmmm, wonder if I can charge them milage

They certainly do take the "Penny" part of their name seriously.
Just be happy they're not "J.C. Hundred Dollar Bills".

Wow... just when I thought I'd seen the limit of human stupidity...
...
*sigh*
This kind of thing fills me with SUCH confidence for the future of humanity...

I've seen the oppisite cause drama. My friend Jenni works at a video store, and one day a guy walked in and she informed him that he still had 2 cents on his late fee charges and asked if he'd like to pay the 2 cents at the same time as his purchase. He threw a Hissy Fit! Jenni even offered to pay it herself and he STILL was having a hissy. They weren't going to limit his rent ability for 2 cents, but he just was pissy because he owed 2 cents.

I'd shred you for the pun, but you might be on to something, there.

but she even offered to pay it for him since it upset him so much and he was still angry. How many counter people are going to pay your movie rental late fees?

By then, I'm sure it was the
principle of the thing.

The principle of the thing is always the hardest to reason with. And did Sparrow just make a pun?

We got rid of all our little shitty currencies, so this sort of stuff doesn't happen as often now Down Here unless it's through bills and so forth. No more one and two cent coins any more (for about twenty years now, I think).
Get rid of your pennies and other coins with stupid names. It makes it much easier and you carry less shrapnel in your wallet.

Sheesh, I didn't get even miffed to pay my
parents' late fee of $7 at the video store.

We're going the opposite direction and making more coins.
Canada's backwards...

49 cents....geez. I say just pay it. It's just 49 cents. But when you get there, rant your heart out. Make a scene. Maybe they'll stop bothering people with such nonsense when you do?

We won't get rid of our pennies here in the US. It's been tried. Too many people like to collect pennies - it's estimated half the pennies that should be in circulation are in drawers, jars, socks, or whatever.

46 cents...? That's just ... ehh ...
I like pennies, nickels, quarters, and all that -- if you save them all up ... well, I remember rolling $65 in small change from just two weeks' tips last summer.

while this is obviously silly, (why am i constantly the voice of descention) what's the receptionist to do? Management gives her just enough authority to carry out transactions, while making sure she must seek approval for any out of the ordinary because thinking could cause anarchy!
We do the same thing at the library I work at, making people go through hoops to take care of petty things to prevent some peon from working up the gusto to let their friends out of a library fine.
So frustrating!

Awhile back we had a two for one sale on lightbulbs or something and the way we do that is we just cut the price in half for each light bulb. This guy bought to light bulbs then noticed that we had cut the price in half, but the full price was an odd, number so how could that be.
Convinced that we just screwed him out of two cents, he comes up to the Customer Service desk and demands that I give him back his money. After a much flustered me trying to figure out why he's so upset over two cents (I've seen people leave half a dollar at the checkstand 'cause they don't want the change), I finally do the math for him and it turns out that he's actually getting two cents out of the deal. I tell him so and he goes "Oh, okay, then we're fine." And walks away.
I wanted to say something snarky about how he should give us two cents back, but I was too blown away at the time by the fact that he was getting SO MAD that we had false advertising which might have caused him to loose out on two cents.
