I have to admit I never actually saw the whole thing. It was one of those, "This is so bad, I'm going to shut it off now" movies.

Kind of like Tomb Raider.

The first 2/3 of Doom weren't that bad at all...a decent little "Aliens" rip-off.

But then things kind of fall apart in the final 3rd. We have good guys going over-the-top evil for no particular reason, there's suddenly zombies running around and all sorts of crap. The hyped "1st-person shooter" scene is gory fun...but it doesn't fit in with the rest of the movie at all...the first 2/3 is suspenseful and the enemies are portrayed as unstoppable killers. Then we get this scene where one guy wipes out dozens of them effortlessly in gory ways in a silly 1st person perspective...just doesn't fit together.

Oh...and then the biggest flaw...the Doom movie, based on the series of games that made first-person shooting popular, ends with a big fist-fight in it's finale. Bwuh? That would be like a Rocky movie ending a John Woo-esque shootout.

It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but it wasn't very good either...5/10.

That's exactly average, though. I really can't believe it'd be even an average movie.

If first two halfs are average (decent Alien ripoff) and the third one ruins it, then mathermatically speaking it's 5/3+5/3+1/3 = 3.66

Yeah I know. As funny as that movie is, it's quite tragic that he wasn't able to do one last good movie before he passed on.

Oh, and before I forget, I really did like the Final Fantasy movie. Honest!

I count that as one good transition from games into movies. Heck, they went backwards from movie into video game with 10... but let's not degenerate this into a video game debate thread.

Blech. Okay, Doom was better than the Final Fantasy movie...mostly because the FF movie really had very little connection to any of the games and went for more cold sci fi. Unless you meant Advent Children which, though I know it was a piece of fangasmic propoganda, I still loved ^_^.

I've always thought Duke Nukem just screamed for a film version.
I can picture it being like Army of Darkness, and that's just fine by me.

I adored the first Resident Evil. They really did a good job with the game-to-movie conversion, not necessarily staying true to the games, but staying true to the storytelling style. And this is why I was so pissed off when halfway through the second Resident Evil movie they apparently got -bored- of zombies and walked away from the plot. All I can say besides that is "Two by two, hands of blue."

Doom was going to be a bad movie from square one. I wanted it to be a good watch. I didn't play the Doom games but I was familiar with their game play (if not their story). It was a bad sign that about halfway through the movie I started getting bored and fidgity.

The Final Fantasy movie (which could've gotten by just as well with the title "The Spirits Within", dropping the [false] connection to the FF games) was a very pretty movie. It had a decent story, but it was definitely not a Final Fantasy movie. I want to see Advent Children -so- badly... I'm just waiting for my brother to download the subtitles for it without having to reformat his harddrive from all the viruses he keeps picking up.

No problem, just re-dub one of Arnold Shwarzeneger films so that everyone calls him "Duke" and that will be about it.

I wouldn't consider 5/10 average...I'd consider that below average bordering on downright lousy.

6 or 7/10 is what I'd consider average. A 5/10 is a D in most any grading system I ever had in school.

Really? You had it easy. 65% or lower meant an F in my school.

I think this is where I disagree with most people, because it really was FF-like. Most people have trouble in realizing that the only real ties between each of the games are the names Bahamut (sadly missing from TSW), Cid, and Excalibur (also sadly missing). In any case, the movie is a great deal more futuristic than, say, FF-IV. But it's not too far a stretch from FF-VII.

Anyway... I still enjoyed it. I might be one of the few who did.

But... but... but... average is in the middle! That gives you maximum manoevering space on either side. The way you have it set up, you've got more room for movies to be lousy than good. It doesn't really make a lot of sense, common or mathematical.

Well, for me anyway.
