You know, I often wonder what my own accent sounds like to other English speakers. Does an American midwest accent sound harsh, sharp? Is it ok, or does it grate? It's not like I can tell since it's what I've got.
So what accents annoy you, and what do you love? What is it about them?
Me, I can't stand a Jersey accent. It just....it hurts, deep down.

I think midwestern accents are sound fine in moderation. If people sound like the woman in "Fargo" then I start twitching.
I tend to like the softer southern accents. I blame it on the mystique of the southern belles. I like the way the Irish sound as well.
I hate New York and New Jersey accents. Because (almost) everyone thinks I have one or the other. I lived in the mid-atlantic all my life and my parents are both from the midwest! I've never even been to New England dammit!!!
Although people have occasionally mistaken me for English, Australian, Romanian or Russian. I don't get it.

Re: Accents
The Jersey accent is a myth. Almost no one form New Jersey has a Jersey accent. And the ones who do don't have it naturally, they all get it from trying to sound like they have a Jersey accent.MixedMyth wrote: Me, I can't stand a Jersey accent. It just....it hurts, deep down.

Well, I'm from the Pacific North West.. one of the most unnoticable accents of all the US accents. Apparently we have 'bland' accents. Although when I went to Australia one summer a lady at a fruit shop said I had a really cute accent and couldn't figure out where I was from.

I don't think I have much of an accent. Being from suburbia in California, the we don't have accents so much a particular way of speaking. I tend to use 'like' a lot, I sometimes tack on 'ya know?' at the end of sentances, and I'm familar with the word 'hella'. For those of you that don't know, 'hella' is an increment of measure that roughly equates to a whole damn lot.

I'm told people in Minnesota and Wisconsin have really pronounced "o"s. Out-of-staters have commented that we sound like the Canadians portrayed in movies. Um... eh?
I love the classic Manhattan accent, even though few people I heard in New York had it. I think French and thick British accents are gorgeous, and Scottish and Australian accents just rock. I can't really say there are any accents I don't like, come to think of it...

When I was in australia, there was this cab driver that would just go on and on about footie...but we couldn't understand a word he said so for almost half an hour my group just nodded and agreed with him on which team he thought was going to win and which team sucked and so on.

When speaking Swedish, I do so with no accent or dialect. The only problem is I talk to fast and careless, not quite pronouncing everything so my speech is slurred and incomprehensible to some.
I can't really imitate any specific dialect of Swedish, but I do know a few phrases in the most common ones.
I can also identify some of the most common ones with relative certainty, but I'm no good with dialects.
When speaking English I might have a little bit of an accent, but again, my big problem is talking to fast and not pronouncing everything.
