Ahh. That would be because you cannot connect to a MUD through your browser (with few exceptions). You need to either use telnet (you can do this from your command prompt. Type "telnet worldwidesam.net 4000" without the quotes) or you need a MUD client. There are many free ones out there. Just do a google search on free mud client and you'll find a few. :)

I was once very much into the MUSH thing. Gohs, Myst Haven, Fantasia, Discordia (still around), Vampire: the Masquerade, Shards, and a couple others. I wound my way so deep into the code that I could create little invisible video cameras, sneak into players' bedrooms and capture them going all cyber and everything. Ah, those were the days.

What portal do you use, and why don't you directly connect through a mud client? (if I know which you use, then I can try to make sure it works with the portal ;) ).

If I've changed the name, then the MUD is Comic Genisis, but I don't know if I've yet done that, nor do I know if I'm on any lists for you to search through. If you have a mud client, I seriously suggest using it directly, because I know that works ;)

Pimpette, I think I may have to be online at the same time as you to make you an immortal, unless I edit your file directly. Are you going to be on sometime this evening? If not, I'll just go ahead and modify your file.

Didn't get on last night - got home and pretty much collapsed.
Do you use the IRC? When I get home tonight I'll go on there and when you want to meet up on the MUD, just come on and give me a poke.
Or, if not.. we can arrange a time (are we in the same time zone? I think so but I can never remember who is where..).

I'll pop by the IRC tonight then. We are in the same time zone (I'm in Sudbury), and I'll probably be home around 5-ish. I'll be popping in and out all night as I play games and work on the comic. :)

Just a note that if you want to also be able to play the game, you should have a separate account, because as a wizard you are way too high a level to play the rest of the game :)

I just tried it out, and I can't say I'm terribly impressed with this MUD client, but I can connect to mine just fine. What information are you putting in for this MUD?

Hey Pimpette, I didn't catch you online last night (assuming you DID log in ;) ) so I just bumped your character up to level 60 or something. That should make you a wizard, but let me know if it doesn't.

If you need help with what you can do as a wiz, type wizhelp.

I AM A WIZARD! ALL FEAR ME! *evil cackles*

Post by Pimpette »

w00t, wizardness.
Sorry I didn't catch you last night - my shifts run 2:30-10:30, so I didn't even get online till about quarter to eleven.

Well, time to play around.
Things may not change for a while, as I have to get used to the commands and stuff. Also I've got a convention next weekend, so I won't have a whole lot of time to put into it yet.
Still, I've always wanted to make a MUD. This will be fun. :D

*many hugs and thanks to Sam for the help*

No problemo :) If you plan to make any big changes to the main areas, let me know as a friend and I are playing around as well. It might be easiest to make whole new areas and then when the time comes I can change the default newbie area to point to yours and such.

Also, I'll be making some changes to the code base. It REALLY sucks losing so much experience when several carrion crawlers decide to gang up on you, forcing you to flee in a desperate attempt to keep your meager newbie gear. So I'll be reducing the fleeing xp penalty at least. We'll see how the rest goes. :)

This means that i'll be restarting the MUD from time to time, and so you'll have to make sure to save your progress (as when a MUD is restarted it'll reload from the area files, and if yours isn't saved, it gets lost.

Yeah I'll probably put together whole new areas, and you can just change the defaults. I've got ideas for the newbie zone (heh).
Again, I'll be pretty slow for now, but no worries - I'm still here and enjoying myself thoroughly :D

Good good :) If you see Vagyr around, that's a friend of mine who's tinkering wih it as well. He's also an immortal. You also have the power to grant people area-building privilages (I think) so if you want to, feel free to delagate :)

I'm going to alter the codebase to change the fleeing penalty now. At level 4, losing 6600 xp for fleeing a bad fight is just way too much. It isn't very condusive to getting people to explore much :D

I'll be making some minor tweaks like this from time to time, just so you know.
