According to BMI I am 0.7 away from being classed obese. I'm apparently high end overweight verging on obese

.
Accoring to the BMI, I'm way overweight as well. It doesn't take into account body composition, only height and weight, so my old roommate who lives off of twinkies and hotpockets is in better health tan me. Body fat percent is a way better measurement of health.
Speaking of which, War, didn't you say you were 3% body fat at some point?

Maria: When I was seven, and already had big, honkin' boobs.
Michelle: Never really thought of myself as athletic... I've never liked sports. Plus, running in gym class always made me want to pass out.

Nah, never got that low. I was down at 9%. Need to get down to that again. At 9% I'll be about 185lbs. Which still classes me as overweight. In order to be what they class as healthy without losing muscle mass would involve me having to hit 3% bodyfat.

I am honor-bound to insult you and your silly SCA-going mannerisms.
As a point of clarification, I've been fencing for some time, which is a very good workout in some rather obscure muscle groups. Plus, holding up an Epee for a fifteen-point bout gets rather tiresome.
I also go to the gym three times a week. I'm genetically blessed with low cholesterol and an average blood pressure of 100/55.
All of this said, I can't run distance for beans, and have no cardiovascular endurance. I can sprint mighty fine, though.

Sprains are almost worse than breaks. A bone will heal, but when tendons and ligament get damaged, they fill in with scar tissure, which is far inferior to the original material. You then get a weaker joint that is far too flexible and is prone to re-spraining. Take it easy on that ankle. And don't ice for more than 20 minutes at a time, as it can cause more swelling.

I can attest to this...i've sprained both my ankles severely and now i'm stuck with ankles that like to go 'oops, giving out on you' and get sprained. again. @_@

Mostly when my doctor had me pulled out of PE in the 4th grade for a heel condition.
I didn't attend PE again until high school, where they wouldn't let me replace the PE credits. So I took three years of golf and one year of aerobics.

when did you realize you were unathletic?
When I hit the reply button and got winded.

I dunno, I'm 120 lbs at 5' 10" and I can outrun most people in track... Not too shabby, although underweight.

I'm 165 Ibs at 5'11".
As a child I used to play on a baseball team for several years.
As a teenager I used to mountain bike and BMX (I still would BMX if I had the money. I sold mine before I went to college because I thought I'd have no room for it)
Now I wrestle with my friends. One nearly gave me a concussion last weekend when he elbow dropped my head on a cement floor.
We also bought plastic baseball bats and beat the fuck outta each other.
I'm not unathletic - I'm just not athletic in the good way.
Hooray for violence!

it's actually the ankle that in 8th grade I sprained about a dozen times, no joke. had to see an ankle-doctor or whatever to rehabilitate it. since then it's never been the strongest, but I've managed to go without furthur sprains until now.

The athletic part has never been a problem, especially when it comes to climbing fences, trees, walls... (I even use to climb past my home front gate 'cause it takes less time than pulling out the keys and open it). But for climbing i'm advantaged by being underweight (55kgs only), so lifting myself up doesn't require much effort.
My actual flaw in sports is team-coordiantion. In fact i'm all for sports that don't require teamwork (running, canoeing...)

Woohoo! I'm underweight! Hmm...that's probably not good.

In the US, at least, BMI is actually a surprisingly accurate way to measure obesity. That's because most of us *are* obese. In fact, doctors use it all the time as a quick way to assess patients. It is not just a kid's math equation.

It's not as detailed as it should be though, since no mention of muscle to fat ratio is mentioned, nor is the frame size of the individual. Every doctor I saw told me that I was way too skinny, and in fact I could feel my tailbone when I sat down, and my ribs were visable. Yet the BMI scale still said I was overweight.

...hmmm, just got back from my weekly JROTC meeting and I outdid half the people, and for the first time did more pushups than the bare minimum. I think this is good. Not sure.

Plus it'd be quicker to get the calipers out and do a quick skin fold test around the waist than measuring the weight and height of the individual.

Ehh, I used to be an athlete. I did track and field - long distance and long jump - and at 5'11'', everyone insisted that I play basketball. Then, I decided that academics were more important, and I haven't been on a team in ages.
I still walk, bike, or jog everywhere when possible, though I don't pay much attention to that BMI stuff.
