I think about a lot of stupid shit when I'm shut in my house and not doing anything. For example: do real life romances trump internet romances?

Well, do they?

Let's say you're involved with someone online, would a real life romantic interest take credence over it? Would the cyber lovin' be trumped simply because of the possibility of "actual sex"?

Internet romances can work out, they take a hell of a lot of work though. More than most people want to put into them.

The better of my long term real-life romances started off as internet deals, do did the worst. Then again maintaing an LDR is tough as all hell. I guess it depends on your situation.

you need some physical contact, but conversation is far more important. if someone is engaging enough in conversations you have online, that is the important thing. kissing can actually get boring if thats ALL you do. plus you get chapped lips in winter.

the main problem I have with internet romances is if you meet the person online, you really have no way to prove what age they are unless you meet them. creeps me out a bit.

Of course not! Haven't you ever seen You Got Mail? Meg Ryan totally got with Tom Hanks even though they both had significant others.

I think it's really because even if you have something nice in person, there's always a part of you wishing there's something better. And with the internet, you can believe the person you're talking to is perfect and fulfills your requirements of The Ultimate Man/Woman of my Dreams.

In real life, you know for a fact your SO isn't perfect and has faults and...yeah. Disappointing, no?

Not being able to verify age is your concern? Knowing the pranks a friend of mine used to pull I'm more concerned about verifying gender.

HAHHHAA I used to do that. Pretend I was a guy, sweettalk the girl, then say "I'M A CHICK!" and block her. Or something. But that was a long time ago.

I've had three online romances of any capacity...

The first one we were going to meet, and it turned out to be my best friend's girlfriend; she thought I'd get a kick out of the joke. I really, really didn't.

The second one had one night of sex and partying followed by six months of being stalked and cyberstalked (and neither the good kind of stalking). One of her lines: "I'm fucking someone else now. Does that make you hot?" another: "If I can't have you, then maybe I'll just visit and kill us both."

The third however, turned out to be Bethie, my fiance'. We've been really happy for several years now and it worked out great.

So overall, a 33% success rate. I guess that's bad, but in the end I can't complain.

Though far less manipulative. With an LDR you at least can factor out the "women using sex as a weapon" They can still use it as a weapon but it's not nearly as powerful. Spent the better part of two months trying to break up with a girl who used that mighty mighty weapon to keep it going. Damn me and my crotch-driven willpower!

Internet relationships suck. Its basically the sadest thing, when you have feelings for someone and can't touch them. its horrible and I don't know why someone would let themselves hurt so much. But love is fickle, and we all look for it. I just personally don't want to ever go through the internet love stuff again.

Um, I'm gonna ignore the obvious arguments about the dangers f picking up people online, and just say this.
I don't think you can really know someone in a chatroom. People act differently online.

I don't think you can/should base a relationship on chatroom discussions. You need more communication than that for a relationship. Even though I've had many online relationships it never escalated to boyfirend/girlfriend until we met. Usually at a convention of some sort.

I met my current girlfriend over the internet (we just had our one year too!)

I quickly discovered, when you live in a tight GLBT comunity, after a while you can only date people you've slept with, people your exs' have slept with or really creepy women that are built like refrigerators and wear leather and talk about spanking you in an unpleast way... and that kind of started to creep me out.

It's long distance and we spend all our extra money in order to see each other, but it's worth every penny and more
