So?

Clowns fit easily into very small cars.

Everyone knows the Brittish have mastered the sublime skill of dimensional transcendentalism.

You should see the inside of their phone booths.

Once again, this is a show of british ingenuity prevailing. Now y'see, the reason for the phone booths being so small, is that a person can easily support their own weight for extended periods of time by wedging themselves up against both walls, thereby avoiding the neccessity of standing in the large puddle of tramp's piss that is a mandatory feature in the modern phonebox.

You don't know what dimensional trancedentalism is, do you?

And that means you don't watch Doctor Who.

A couple things I've always complained about:

Why are there 'u's in words like 'color', 'armor' and things like that? It's completely redundant and adds nothing to the word.

Also about the road thing, from my perspective, I say that since the Americans pretty much pioneered mass roadway systems, we're the ones that did it right since we pretty much laid down the groundwork. We didn't invent cars exactly, but a simple man named Henry Ford took them to the level that made them a reasonable transit system for the average person. Before that all roads were dirt roads used by pedestirans and horses. Since we industrialized the car, we needed to make roads built for cars. And because of that, we wrote the rules on car-based roadways. So when we say we drive on the 'right' side of the road, it doesn't just mean 'opposite of left'. :P

As for the 110/220 thing, why are they so proud of using MORE electricity to run the same products? I thought saving energy was the better way. :P

As for cricket...

Ever consider that maybe horses and carriages had road rules before cars were invented? I'm not gonna bother researching this, but I'll bet you'll find that they did. In which case, WE'RE the ones being contrarian, not the other way around.

Also, if you're gonna bitch on the letter u you're gonna have to justify the "ough" and the "tion" suffixes as well. Remember, British English came FIRST, which means that the lack of u's in American English are US being contrarian (Oh snap, isn't that what you were complaining about in the road rules paragraph?). English is NOT a logical language, and the presence or lack of U's in certain words are completely up to the culture and thus your complaining about them is what's redundant, not the letter themselves.

I was being silly about the U thing. It's just something I like to poke fun at for no apparent reason.

And I didn't do any research on the road thing either. I was just joining in on the differences of opinion. So yeah, my statements were full of holes, but it was more or less a silly post for a silly topic to begin with. (Hence the :P 's at the end of each one.)

The road thing harks back to the days of yore when people stuck to the left so they could swing their sword with their right hand and hit the guy coming the other way.

I think it was the Romans who started the "drive on the right" side of it. Something to do with their chariots.

And as for English...they way it is written generally does make sense if you know the rules it was based on.

The 'tion' suffix is used on the end of a base word that ends with the letter t.

The 'sion' suffix is used on the end of a base word that ends with the letters d, s and l.

eg -
construct - construcTION
suspend - suspenSION
success - succesSION
expell - expulSION

The ci 'sh' sound is slightly odd and can't quite be explained that easily, and ce is only used in words based around 'ocean'.

'ch' as sh is only used in words borrowed from the French.

There are more rules about the use of the English language and how it is spelt, but I won't go into them here except to say that the Yanks took out letters they didn't think we important without realising why they were there in the first place.

I may well be the only one here vaguely interested in this too, I appreciate that fact. :)

"Enough" is from Germany back in Asterix's day.

Give or take a century or two.

The Swedish words for it is, depending on context, nog or tillräckligt, both with the alternate translation of sufficient.

Example of use:
Jag har fått nog! - I've had enough!
Har vi tillräckligt mycket pengar än? - Do we have enough money yet?
Så länge skutan kan gå, så länge hjärtat kan slå, så länge solen den glittrar på böljorna blå...

The 'ough' has six possible sounds in English... oh, oo, uff, off, aw and ow as in cow. I'm not sure where the spelling originated though. Joel is probably right.

Different nog, though careless Swenglish could get that translation and many more out of Egg Nog...

It should also be noted that there's a few more meanings to the Swedish nog, as it is a synonym to the Swedish word that translates directly as probably. Nog can depending on context also be translated as probably, I expect, I dare say, I suppose, no doubt, doubtless, I (you) [must] admit, certainly, to be sure, it is true... Amongst other things.
Så länge skutan kan gå, så länge hjärtat kan slå, så länge solen den glittrar på böljorna blå...
