I think the "chicks dig jerks" thing stems from the fact that woman like a man with self-confidence and a little mystery. Jerks are usually jerks because they're arrogant, and the mystery comes in the way a guy changes in regards to how he treats people. IE: he's really nice to her, or he's really a good person inside (she thinks). With a nice guy, he's usually nice to everyone, but a jerk seems to have levels upon levels. In reality, a lot of jerks are just jerks. You can examine their problems with their mothers all you want, but what it boils down to is that he chooses to be mean instead of accepting.

I've also heard it said that women don't think a guy can be nice and have a backbone. (It's not truuuueee!)
