What movies have you seen recently?

Despite the the bad title, and Shyamammaamalamaman's dismal recent track record (The Village and Lady in the Water were both sub-par) I really want to see The Happening. Everything I've seen about it intrigues me, and there's the added bonus of Zooey Deschanel being in it.

But seriously, I just thought the name of the movie was awesome. I mean, "The Happening?" It doesn't get more "trying to sound like a B-movie" than that. Well, in my opinion anyway. Also, the only Shamawhatever movie I've seen is Signs, and I thought that movie sucked.

The movie has been nearly universally panned: 20% rating at Rottentomatoes.com. So I'll give it a pass.

I finally saw The Triplets of Belleview on DVD. Strange little animated film, but in an enjoyable way.

A while back there was a thing about M Night Shamylan doing Avatar the Last Airbender movies. I can't quite picture it.

Anyhoo, I just got back from Seeing Prince Caspian. I quite enjoyed it, despite the weird tones the series has. But Reepicheep is awesome.

It inspired me to do a one page comic, actually. Not I just need to do it.

Watched Shakespeare in Love for the first time in nine years this weekend. I feel like such a geek over how much I liked it. Haven't felt like that after watching a movie since Ghost World. Goddamn.

Saw The Grudge. Oh God, it was fucking LOL. There were some genuinely creepy moments (i.e., the CCTV playback scene, with the shadow going towards the camera), but everything else was just goofy.

Banlieue 13 (District B13) is a movie starring David Belle, that guy who does parkour (the 'sport' where people jump over shit and flip and do jackie chan). It was fun, in a really old school way that reminded me of Ong Bak and Drunken Master, for some odd reason.

As for The Happening: I saw the leaked script before it came out - just to see the OMG SURPRAIS ending. Awful.

He's a good filmmaker, but he has this need to go all in on some gimmicky climax and it's like, dude, just make a movie.

Dr. Dorian "Doc" Paskowitz takes his wife and nine kids and creates the gypsy surfer life for better and worse. It's an indi film so it's not in the major movie houses. It can make you sad you didn't grow up that way and happy you didn't.

I don't like when I hear that a film is 'made for cinema'. There are some great films that lose most of their appeal on small screen ("Blade runner") but nowadays it usually means that the film is packed wall-to-wall with special effects and fast camera movements, and has no redeeming values that you can enjoy when these aren't flashing enlarged in front of your eyes.

From what I've heard it fits into the 'unintentionally hilarious' school of bad films. Natalie Hayne's says it's the funniest film she's seem this year, which is a recommendation of sorts, I guess. I'm going to see it, but I can't guarantee I'll stay quiet the whole way through.

Now you've got me interested. I laughed through a good deal of "Signs".

You wouldn't happen to know the German title? I'm wondering if I've made a point not to watch it.

True. His older movies felt like The Twilight Zone; newer ones felt more like Goosebumps. And while he excels at directing, and can create some genuinely touching moments, the plot needed to glue it all together almost always ends up too brittle. I wish he'd just give up and hire a writer.

Unfortunately I think his ego has been irreparably inflated since the felating he received post-Sixth Sense.
