They bought it from Xerox. Xerox invented the original GUI, but they didn't think it was anything more than a cool toy. Apple bought it from Xerox, HOWEVER at the time, Bill Gates AND Steve Jobs both worked for Apple. So technicly, Since Bill Gates IS Microsoft, both Apple and Microsoft both bought it from Xerox. There was no stealing. It was leagally purchased. Now, Steve Jobs was the hardware guy. He worked on the phsycial stuff. Bill Gates was the software stuff. There was a dissagreement between Jobs and Gates about what to do with the Gui they perchased. Jobs wanted to make it exclusively for their hardware (The way Apple STILL runs things to this day.) but Gates realized that making it into stand alone software that can be used on multiple platforms would make much more sence. So, he worked on OS 1 for Jobs, but at the same time, developed Windows as a side project. OS 1 was releasted to the world with the Macintosh, but after that Gates left and started his own company, called Microsoft, using the side project called Windows as his flagship product. So in actuality, Microsoft technicly wrote both the Apple OS and Windows. But OS has since been developed by Apple, and Windows has been developed by Microsoft. So in reality, there was no stealing involved at all. They were essentially the same program that have grown into two seperate things, stemming from the original GUI developed by Xerox.cjburgandy wrote:Microsoft didn't write DOS. Everything else was snatched or bought from someone else. Bill Gates may be evil, but he's a genius when it comes to making business ventures, even if they're risky as hell. He told IBM about DOS before he had even bought the rights to it, or even knew if the code actually exsisted. Now, that takes balls.rkolter wrote:Now Kisai be fair. The current software they produce has no comparison on any other platform - in fact, other platforms have stolen their concepts from Microsoft. By way of example, if Microsoft "stole" the concept of windows from Apple, then the linux community "stole" the concept for xwindows from Microsoft.
No doubt Microsoft is one of those corporations that thinks it's so big that it can get what it wants. And that's bad. But they aren't a horde of thieves led by ringleader Bill Gates.
Edit: By the way, Bill Gates DID write DOS (In fact, it's probably one of the only programs he actually wrote.) DOS is a command line program, not a GUI (Graphical User Interface). Xerox developed the first GUI.
Edit 2: Another thing a lot of people wouldn't guess: I watch a lot of random documentries about random topics. ^_^
Edit 3: By the way, I know this was an old topic from two pages ago, but I was working today and missed it. So

That reminds me of the same thing with the way my father smelled when he came home from work (where I happen to work now). My mom complained of how I smell when I got home, and admitted both she and my father never liked the smell when he started working there. My brother and I, however, find the smell to be somewhat pleasant.Pimpette wrote:I like the smell of gasoline/engine oil and cigarettes on people.
Because that's what my Papa (grandpa) always smelled like. I <3 my Papa.

I usually don't let bad memories linger in my head. I shrug em off then go have fun doing something.legostargalactica wrote:i'm the same way.. as keff, not as rock, i don't know what's up with the weird noises...Keffria wrote:Really? KKB I think you are confusing reality with something else. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MicrosoftKittyKatBlack wrote:They bought it from Xerox. Bill gates didn't write DOS, he licensed it
Bill gates didn't invent basic, wrote the altair's BASIC and got pissed off when people were pirating it, Bill gates is the father of the EULA.
Bill gates never worked for apple, microsoft had an agreement to write software for apple, but they misappropriated trade secrets from apple in doing so and wrote windows. (I should also mention that there were a few other GUI systems at the time). If you've seen Windows 1.0 or 2.11 and compared it with early MacOS, the resolution is the same, but windows is horribly clunky.
Windows didn't gain market share untill 3.1 (3.0 lacked OLE, which is something that IIRC the mac could do.)
Windows 95 was the first fully 32bit preemptive multitasting OS by Microsoft... By comparision MacOS up to I belive 7.5 was cooperatively multitasking like windows 3.1 MacOS 8 addd preemptive multitasking and this is where MacOS started breaking down.
Windows 95... broke down from the start.
Windows NT 3.1 (aka OS2) is another point of Microsoft stabbing it's business partners. Microsoft and IBM agreed to work on OS2 as preemptive multitasking operating system. Microsoft took their work on it and released Windows NT (which worked on i386, Alpha, MIPS, PPC and probably others IIRC, so yes running Windows XP on a PPC isn't out of the question, the NT kernel runs on other platforms.) So in essance, Microsoft forked OS2 to get Windows NT. Then they put the Windows 3.1 Gui into it. Ever wonder why OS2 can run windows 3.1 software?
Anyhow. My point of saying that Evil Billy Gates is such is that his business practices are license and stab or buy and bury.
So yes, Bill is evil. He is the evil ruthless business man. I think the other other evil ruthless business man is Sam Walton (Walmart) , They both got where they are by playing business in a "Do it my way or I'll make sure your products never work with mine"
Anyways I'd rather not continue the argument about wether bill is evil, I'm not spouting linux zealot rhetoric, I'm just saying from my point of view their business methods were detrimental to their economic markets.

My first job was as a night watchman/janitor at a Flexsteel factory. I worked the vampire shift . . . literally, for about a month or so, I did not see the sun at all. Things there got pretty bad, and nowadays there are a few small things that remind me of that time and give me the creeps a little. The most common of those small things is flourescent lights at night, usually over parking lots and especially when there's any amount of loose gravel around.
Existence is a series of catastrophes through which everything barely but continually survives.
