I have this game too.

Single player isn't as good as I would have hoped, but online is pretty good.

Heres a blog I just posted at ScrewAttack.com about Mario Kart:
A lot of mud has been rightfuly slung at Nintendo's latest instalment of the Mario Kart franchise. The game has become a game of luck more so than ever, featuring the most abuse you will ever recieve just for playing the game well. The graphics are dull and blocky, and the music is bland. Turbo boosting has been simplified. I've got some more kindling to add to this fire a failure.

Modes
Remember how in Mario Kart 64 you and a buddy, or three of 'em could race eachother without any other racers? Sometimes that was real fun, and now with personalized Miis availible it really hurts to lose that option. What if I want to construct an epic duel of speed between Austin Powers and Dr. Evil? Sorry, not this generation. I also have to notice that the event games from the DS were removed, and i have to ponder why. I mean, it wasn't fantastic but it was fun nonetheless. Whatever Nintendo had to make room for it wasn't in an improved roster of karts or maps to play on.

Items
Yeah, we hate the items, but allow me to be specific on two points. The blue shell is still the flying homing missle type from the DS. Main thing about this version than from the classic ground version is that it is unblockcable and has a field affect. I fail to see any tactful implications of an unblockable attack in a racing game, who did Nintendo contact to recieve feedback favorable to the monstrocity in lieu of the old version? Why would Nintendo keep it. I fail to see any way in which it would improve the gaming experience and it is for that reason that it bothers me so much. The old one was much better. Second, you lose items when hit with most items. This means whenever you get hit with the unblockable blue shell, lightning bolt, and semi unblockable Pow Block, Mega Mushroom, and Bullet Bill your arsenal is no more, and this wouldn't be an issue if you weren't bombarded with these every ten seconds or so. This removes any advantage to trailing items or carrying around a shell to counter another, i.e. any defensive strategies one could formulate in Mario Kart. its more advantageous to just unload the second you are armed. It removes a significant edge to the game.

Stopping
Finaly, you stop to easily now. This is understandable for hitting a wall, though slightly brushing along a wall has the same result which doesn't make an awful lot of sense physicaly, but it also applies to items. In the past you would roll foward a little into a stop, in a way that if you were clever you could pull out of faster than usual. There was a recovery strategy. Once again this has been removed.

So in summary my beef with Mario Kart is in how much strategy has been removed from the game, and its much more than advance techniques, though the other stuff amounts pretty much to only Nitpicking. That wont stop me from playing it though, in fact I'm really digging how accessable Time Attack mode is.

My biggest complaint is the stop-and-start nature of the racing. Mario Kart's always been a bit like that, but now you can't get 30 seconds of uninterrupted racing without being hit by a blue shell, lightning, pow block, etc, unless you're playing time trials. That's just a little bit too much.

I'm pretty sure you actually can play one on one versus, Serge. you just have to go into the option screen and set the computer players to off.

I haven't done much online stuff yet because I just started playing the singleplayer the other day and usually you just get your ass kicked if you go online right away because you don't have the sweet karts and characters. But I'll be on and rockin soon.

How many have done the tournament yet? I can't get under 2:00 yet... I got really close last time, but all the freakin items just keep messin with me. Damn computers.

Just got this game, and I enjoy it a lot. The new tracks are fun and it's cool that it has tracks from previous games as well. It's really hectic with the increased number of racers per track. 12 competitors = too many flying items, and it is way too easy to go from 1st to 12th!

I'll put out a friend code as soon as I figure out why the wii isn't seeing the wifi anymore.

Technically, you can dodge it. If you have a mushroom, you can boost just after it turns vertical and outrun it.

My beef is that the game seems aimed at casual people, but is ruthlessly hard. I mean, look at the character selection - there's like 900 billion possible combinations.
Also: what the heck happened to free for all last man standing balloon battle? Who invented this timed scored crap?! They need a stab to the face.
