I use the "clusterfuck" method. It'd be nice to get down to only media on my shelves, instead of a lot of everything.

Oversize books on the large bottom shelf, books I have read on these shelves, and books I haven't read yet on that shelf.

I remember having an organized bookshelf, but that was a long time ago.

Size, author, series, genre.

I may or may not have put way too much thought into organizing my bookshelf. I have one row in the back that starts with cats.
Cat mystery books by one author, another couple cat books by different people, another cat book by another author.. and then some fantasy books by the previous author.
Am I weird?

Genre first, then size within the genre. I can't wait until my husband finishes his downstairs office and gets his crap out of this room. I'm going to use 2 X 4's and make an entire wall a shelf.

Have a bookcase at home that barely gets used. The top shelf is fulllll of old sketchbooks and notebooks going back to when I was about 13, I'd say. Middle two shelves have books I've read usually grouped by series, but I don't read too many series. I don't even remember what's in the bottom; old magazines, probably.

At school, my books are scattered everywhere in my room. I don't have a bookcase, but I have a book drawer I toss things into.

But my books usually tend to end up next to the computer, my bed, or the couch. Oh yeah, and we have a nice collection of Bathroom Readers... in the bathroom.

Awesome! If I could take a picture of my shelf, I totally would. Best I can do is try to describe mine. Top shelf starts with oddly shaped books, mostly comic compilations, then hard backs, then Stephen King. Forgotten Realms and general fantasy spanning the second shelf and the beginning of the third, some scifi, then classic stuff at eye level (Kafka, Orwell) to make me look smarter than I really am. Manga is at the end of the third shelf and below that on the fourth, big giant huge books, including text books and RPG stuff. Finally, on a table below that, soft comics and magazines that I no longer have room for on the shelf proper.

Course, this is all AFTER I got it cleaned up. Before that, there were random books strewn all over it, a bottle of wine for some reason and complete chaos on the bottom shelf. :shifty:

I group by genre. But size is an issue since they don't all fit on the shelf. I like to keep books by the same author together.

I sort my books by size, author, and whether it's hardback or paperback. Since most of them are of one genre (horror; all but a couple are Stephen King, at that), sorting them that way isn't too difficult.

The only books I have in plain view (besides whatevers lying around while being used, that is) are the Harry Potter series, in the living room:
Image

I store most of my books in the top of the bedroom closet, and am kinda surprised that the shelf hasn't come crashing down yet:

The encyclopedia set, as well as the rest of the books which don't fit in the closet, are stored inside the hope chest in the bedroom:

So...not at all organized at the moment, but if I had space, I'd probably do them by topic, then authors within that.

Well I only just put everything up last week - hooray for moving again.. But for some reason, my bookshelf is the one thing that always stays organized. I always put every book back exactly where I found it, and aside from a few random things (bookmarks, my magic 8 ball) that float around my room, the bookshelf always looks the same.

While the rest of my room slowly swings back and forth between "merely disorganized" and "disaster area".

Two bookcases.
Call them leftie and righty.

Uppermost shelf (1 of 6) on Lefty is military history, military fiction and assorted "nice" (read expensive) books.
2 of 6 is the home of the now discontinued collection of WH40k rulebooks and magazines.
3 of 6 is home to a mix of videos, dvds, fantasy and sf books.
4 of 6 is home to assorted junk (a pair of old rubber gloves from a military C-protection kit hold a prominent position, next to the box of my current cellphone). Also, here is my bible(s), two psalm books and a couple of other books.
5 of 6 is a mix of old magazines, mostly PC gaming related.
6 of 6 is mostly obscured by a cardboard box containing empty cardboard boxes. There is a collection of geography related books ("World of today", 25 books total, a few years old by now).

Uppermost shelf on righty contains more military history, military technology and a couple of folders for an old collection... Our Amazing World or something like that. All the lifeforms and habitats on the planet.
2 of 6 is Manga magazines (Shonen Jump and Manga Mania). Also some assorted junk, and a few military history/technology books I couldn't fit on the upper shelves.
3 of 6 is more manga (pockets this time), Vilhelm Mobergs Utvandrarepos, and a few assorted books that didn't fit elsewhere.
4 of 6 contains three baskets filled with CD-Roms, Old games, junk and whatever.
5 of 6 is assorted old books from my childhood.. through to my school years up til relatively recently.
6 of 6 is old notebooks and whatever piled up like junk.

Add to this, a CD tower next to the bookshelf is about half full with assorted junk, and piled ontop of it is magazines that don't fit in the bookshelf.
There is also a smaller shelf next to this in which lies even more assorted paperwork and junk.
And then there's a few things I don't know where to put.
...

About time to get rid of the CD-tower and small shelf and add another bookshelf... Not to mention cleaning out a few shelves in Righty.

Oh, and the area on top of the shelves is home to assorted bags and boxes, as well as one mörksugga.
Så länge skutan kan gå, så länge hjärtat kan slå, så länge solen den glittrar på böljorna blå...

My books are stuffed in a box in my closet, and my comic books are stuffed in a dresser drawer. I suck.

See? Now why couldn't stuff like this happen in highschool? No, all they care about then was skateboards. Books had you relegated to the "square" crowd.

I try to do the "by genre and size" method. but currently my bookshelves are filled so books are stacked up in various places. I have two book shelves right now.. I'd get a third but I'm hopefully moving soon.
