I didn't pay much attention to high school "politics" so I'm not quite sure who the "cool" kids were. There were people that everyone knew, but they were well-known because they weren't jerks and everyone liked them.
I moved through a lot of circles myself - I had a friend or two almost everywhere, though I was only ever really comfortable hanging out with one specific group of friends.
I'm a neutral sort of person - I sort of bridge the gap between all sorts of weird groups of people. It's good and bad at the same time.. I've had parties where I invited all my friends and then had to quell fights because one bunch of friends hated another bunch.
Since then I've invoked an anti-fight rule in my house. Anyone who tries to spoil a party by hating on someone irrationally gets booted and their invitations to future parties are revoked until they learn to behave themselves.
I've banned even my best friend from parties in the past. They all learned.
