That's all one needs to know. Best act of all time and the furthest back they go is U2? Aerosmith still performs and they're all geriatric. That's pretty damn impressive. Tom Jones has legions of loyal fans. ELVIS. The KING. One of the greatest performers of all time, he's probably got more impersonators than anyone that has ever lived, has starred in tons of movies (not all great movies, and mostly just platforms for cheesy songs, but still that's part of the whole "act" thing), and has several museums dedicated to him. Frank fucking Sinatra, the king of crooners and the image of cool and sophisticated (with mob backing).

That's just a few, I could easily come up with more nomination worthy individuals/groups. Especially not Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera who are flashes in the pan compared to some of these acts.

Well, ok, you convinced me. If those are nominees for the best act of all time, then Rick Astley should win.

I think "flashes in the pan" is still too generous when measured up next to Elvis, Sinatra and Aerosmith.

Also, on the topic of Aerosmith, COOLEST, TOUR, PLANE, EVER. Taxied next to it while coming in to England after cookout. It was about the most metal thing I'd ever seen,

I would nominate Beatles. That might seem predictable but they were the most succesful blend of commercially succesful and experimental/inovative, which are two extremes that rarely come together. Beatles influenced, directly or through other artists, nearly every genre that appeared after them, and to say that elements that they introduced in popular music are present in work of every significant musician afterwards, is not a big stretch. In any case, the list of artists who referenced, were influenced by, or idolized Beatles, is impressive, stretching over entire music map.
Also, unlike Elvis, films they made were usually damn good.

Well if it's "Best Act Evar!", then wheres bands like Guns N Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, System of a Down, Stone Temple Pilots, Queen, Blur Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Abba, Beatles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Oasis, Rage against the machine, Radiohead, Feeder, Offspring, Muse....

Plenty of far more deserving bands.

I can only assume the shortlist was chosen by morons the general public.

I wouldn't exactly consider most of those bands you named to be eligible either. I mean, they're good bands, just not best act ever contenders.

They're more eligible than Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera.
They're more well known than Tokio Hotel.

Which is my point. It seems that no actual thought has gone into the selected "artistes". Britney or Aguilera being a best act ever? The only thing they need to win is a free gunning down in the street.

If we're talking best act ever, then we shouldn't forget the pied piper.

I have no idea who Rick Astley is.

The accusations of pedophilia near the end of his career really killed his reputation, though.

Well jury could disquality him on grounds of being a fictional character, though, but acts like Nichollo Paganini or Enrico Caruso are bound to be somewhere on the list. And Neron too, after all noone could set the audience on fire like he did.

what about Pink Floyd and the Who? Laser Shows and the first band to be known for smashing their equipment! The Who even got Elton John into their act for Tommy. Elton John should be on that list too! This is why I hate award shows that are aimed for a younger audience, but then add "OF ALL TIME!!!!!" to end of an award. Most of the people who will watch the show have no idea that band stage shows used to be more than just watching a bad singer in a skimpy outfit sing a cookie cutter list of songs.

Hell, if we're going just on straight up "performances", you gotta remember KISS, TSO, and other groups where it's an experience just to see a live performance, light years away from simply listening to a recording.

I completely agree, but I'd go to their show just to see them, well, put on a show. Gotta be more entertaining than prepackaged pop.

Don't think the awards have been handed out yet.
But he's the top of the MTV charts right now.
