After many hours of messing about with various settings, uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, and browsing troubleshooting forums, I discovered that I didn't have my scanner plugged in before.

I've been drawing ears the right way up for about a year now. Unfortunately, it's been a similar length of time since I really did any major drawing.
