Re: Guilty Pleasures...?
Until season 8, I had the names of every contestant, their tribe(s), and their final ranking on Survivor memorized.

Re: Guilty Pleasures...?
Just about everything that gives me joy in my life is a guilty pleasure. Come to think of it, I really should try to learn how to stop feeling so guilty about taking pleasure in things.

Re: Guilty Pleasures...?
I tend to only feel silly when I mention comics, or role-playing, or anime, or what not... mainly cause aside from the internet... people look at me all strangely when I go on and on about something they don't know the slightest thing about. Of course friends 'rib' me on my nerd stuff, usually.bustertheclown wrote:Just about everything that gives me joy in my life is a guilty pleasure. I think the whole "pleasure=bad" thing came from religion and the idea that the pursuit of pleasure, (most commonly sex and eating) can be taken too far and have extreme consequences if large enough percentage of populations don't have boundaries of guilt to stop them. Then this general idea was a victim of guilt by association and the result was that pleasure itself is linked with guilt. Any fun or pleasurable activity not accepted my the mainstream of the geopolitical area in a which someone lives is in some amount condemned, in varying degrees, based on the perceived consequences of that activity.(regardless of the severity of actual consequences, if there are any). For example in the U.S.: videogames, sexuality, drugs, rock/rap music, and non-puritan anything is condemned with varying degrees of guilt by the general populace.
Maybe it's also about the need to like the same stuff that everyone you are around likes in order to fit in. Plus all the cliches or stereotypes that go along with your age group and gender that you don't live down to.
I've rarely had friends,.. so I don't really have guilty pleasures. I'm sure that if I had a group of friends that all our tastes would influence eachother,.. and if I liked something that was unaccepted by my friends, that would be a guilty pleasure.
Taste is totally subjective of course, but if the majority of people in a group (of friends,.. or on a society scale) dislike something then their taste becomes "the rule" of that group.
If anything,.. guilty pleasures are our true likes despite the "rule" of taste of our surroundings or groups.
BUT I think it must be said that most guilt associated with entertainment is totally undeserved.

Even about being a Catholic?
Existence is a series of catastrophes through which everything barely but continually survives.
