I Like the Peanuts Bone Cerebus and .And even Maus was cartoony but that won a pulitzer.Compared to those they could give harsher crits but they never do.But post a superhero drawing. You better run for cover.ShineDog wrote:Its not the content for me, its the way criticism is received.
The problem that riles me is people who ignore and argue against criticism. Senshi is actively working to improve so Ill give her the best advice i can, personally, i think neko is being an ass about it but hey.
The reason i personally never drop any kind of criticism on the cartoony stuff is that for the most part i dont find it interesting. I skim completley over the top of it.
If im going to take an interest in something really cartooney, the artist needs to have a really interesting look or be fantastic or be drowning in character or... i dunno, just something out of the ordinary.
Lots of people who arent particularly great artists will choose cartooney stuff because its easier, but the end result is you end up with something that, to me, is nothing. Thats why i would always recommend the artist learning art first. and then applying his knowledge to make cartooney stuff with real character. Unless i see it, i will to continue to disregard it.

Clowes excels at what he has to excel at. His "action" is stiff, but his subtle depiction of the surreal is top quality.
My take is that the only real issues are foreshortening and line quality. Some women are actually built like that, with a skinny waist and large legs. But the far thigh and hip are bigger than the close one, and that's a problem.
It's not criticism if you haven't insulted someone.ShineDog wrote:You know, maybe im going to sound like an enormous hypocrit here, but...
Neko, what the hell?
Cmon, I am not going to argue with any of senshi's critiques here (except possibly the big legs thing, because i think that works for it), because there are definate problems. but to have a go at her for not working on the figure when there has been clear and marked improvement in her art recently makes you sound like an enormous tool.
Cmon man, i know a lot of people like you for being harsh, but this one felt like a particularly cheap shot.

I think it's moreso the Liefeldism. Superheroes in general don't get a bad rap, but Liefeld inspired work has been an argued point on far more sites than this.bob281 wrote:Why are superheroes so contraversial on this site? They have to be perfect when their drawn. But when somebody does something cartoony they get a free pass. Its a complete double standard.

Look at these two pictures of cartoon rabbits. The bunny on the bottom is very smooth and natural looking. There is even use of shading and even though it is a cartoon there is a sense of an underlying anatomy to it.The one on the top is not smooth and seems as if he is made of some rubbery substance.Furthermore his eyes seem to be detachted from his head and face. And there is no shading whatsoever.

Yes except... thats being a dick, and why?
Because Neko has IMPROVED since then. Thats back in the ass early days of his comic, and youve pulled it up to have a go.
Also, he never posted that in here, how can you not see that this is an enormously asshole thing to do?

The only thing people have done is post things you posted earlier IN THESE THREADS.
Not just pulled your own work out of some asshole place on the net.
Regardless. the important thing to note is that neko has MASSIVELY IMPROVED so your arguments are COMPLETLEY moot.

Is that the Trix bunny? I had no Idea.Spriteville wrote:Also, wouldn't it have made more sense to compare Neko's bunny to the actual Trix bunny, instead of Bugs Bunny?
Regardless it's a cheap shot. And as others said here it's older. You can go into almost anyone's archives and find crap in them. Also your constructive criticism wasn't all that helpful.
