that's because it's ULTIMATE! Think how great it might've been if the original hadn't been awful!

didn't this come before new avengers:the initiative? It turned out to be a trap.
Exactly.
Marvel press release wrote:"comments from Ms. Marvel in ... Civil War: The Initiative, which seemed to indicate that Captain America is still alive, and being held prisoner by the Pro-Registration forces, may not have been exactly what they seemed on the surface ... yes, Captain America, Steve Rogers, is dead."

So not only will someone other than Steve Rogers step into the Cap costume come January, they'll be armed with both a gun and a knife to go along with Cap's classic shield. There's no doubt fan reaction will be loud and varied.
Boom, I called it. Someone else is donning the shield. The real question...is who? Not Hawkeye, this feels too military what with the new design. Let's see if I can go 2/2 and have the Marvel Knights series be tied into this....

I've been working on a graphic novel with a former prof. of mine. He had recently purchased a one of the last large-scale comissions from Gene Colan, an oldschool Marvel artist (Dr. Strange back in the day). The two got to talking, and apparently Colan's working on a few pages for the return of Captain America story - probably due to appear within the next few months. He's nearly retired, but was asked to come back to work on this as his last thing before putting away his pencils for good.

No idea if this is connected to the Alex Ross comic - but super keen that they've got him illustrating!

Wasn't there some noise about Frank Castle?

There was a big discussion on whether Frank Castle is simply a mass murderer, or if he's a serial killer. I continue to stick by mass murderer.

The whole "Frank Castle is Captain America?" was tied into a Punisher: War Journal series where he hears about the return of Hatemonger, who's all dressed up in some neo-Nazi parody of Captain America's costume. So, he makes his own Punisherized version, loads up on guns, and heads down to beat him up. He had the mask of Captain America, which he has since returned to Bucky, so that's why everyone went gaga that he'll be the new Cap.

I hate Ultimate Spidy. They ruined him and Venom both.

I heartily disagree, especially on Venom! Bendis managed to simplify the symbiote's (and Eddie Brock, in some ways) origin quite nicely, making it have a deeper to connection to Peter Parker thereby creating a villain with more personal weight for the story.

Also, someone on another board suggested Nick Fury as the new Cap. If they give him a prosthetic eye, I could see it. It's either that or Hawkeye (though I'd really prefer him to just go back to being Hawkeye and drop this Ronin crap). Bucky seems to obvious.

Won't be Hawkeye. Won't be Bucky. DEFINITELY won't be Nick Fury.
-Hawkeye wants to be noble, heroic Cap. He won't be running around with a gun and knife.
-Bucky is still in hiding and a fugitive and generally assumed to be dead, plus he'd NEVER take the mantle.
-Nick Fury is still in hiding, wanted by SHIELD and the US government. He's getting on in his years and is a behind the scenes type guy.

John Walker, US Agent...possible replacement. Has been in the past, may do so again. Could be someone we don't know yet and they're creating a character. We'll see in January, won't we?

I heard a rumor they are going to use time travel to save Cap. Dunno how much weight to give that.

My personal prediction: Cap will return in January 2009. Marvel's that ridiculous.
