Capcom or SNK?
We've all played a 2D fighter before right? Right?
The 2 dominant 2D fighting forces used to be Capcom and SNK, but SNK closed it's doors a few years ago and now its just Capcom as the major player of this genre.
For refference SNK made 2D fighters such as The King of Fighters and Samuri Show Down.
Capcom made Street Fighter and Darkstalkers and others.
Back on the glorious Sega Dreamcast Capcom produced Capcom vs Snk games (CvS1 and 2. 2 was later ported to the PS2 and GC). A friend of mine recently stumbled on this magnificent relic leading to heated debates about the 2 publishers.
He's a Capcom man, heavy on the Street fighting. He loves Blanka, Ryu, Evil Ryu, Shin Akuma, and Sagat.
I'm an SNK man. I use Yuri, Yuri, and more Yuri. I just find SNK characters less... cheap. I mean Evil Ryu and Shin Akuma have 1 hit KOs pretty much that arent that hard to pull off, and that shouldn't exist in any game if you care about balance. Yeah Omega Rugal has one too, but its hard to pull off and no one ever plays as Rugal anyway. Just about every Street Fighter character can be cheap as HELL. Take Blanca for instance, just sit in the corner and form a ball of electricity by tapping kick. You cannot lose. There are no SNK characters like this.
So yeah, another gaming thread, but indulge me. You a Street Fighter, or a King of the Fighters?

Super Street Fighter II is my favourite fighter of all time.
I haven't been too impressed by what little I've played of King of Fighters...although admittedly that's because I've only played them more recently...maybe if I played them back when I was playing Street Fighter heavily I would have been more impressed.

Guilty Gear XX, whoever makes that game. Bridget man! And Mai! And Millia! People who don't punch?! Insanity!
Really, I like the Capcom vs. SNK games also, cause Sakura, Hayate, Roll are a fun team up, but Bridget dropping a giant teddy bear, Millia smacking people with her hair, and Mai hitting people with a freakin anchor on her schoolgirl filled pirate ship of doom wins.

I came into age with Capcom, so my vote's with Street Fighter.
Although, I became torn when I discovered King of Fighters. (specifically Mai Shiranui)

By the way, since many have named thier favorite publisher instead of answering the 2D fighter question, I find I need to state that SNK is (rather was) not my favorite publisher.
My favorites are as follows:
1. Konami
2. Atlus
3. Capcom
4. Sqeenix
5. Namco
Konami publishes the most unique games in the biz. No game, at least the big ones are run of the mill genre games. Examples: Metal Gear Solid, Suikoden, Dance Dance Revolution, Police 911, and so on.
Atlus makes decent RPGs. The first game I bought with money I earned from a job was Revelations the Demon Slayers (called the Last Bible in Japan) for the GBC. That game owned. Atlus is also responcible for Disgaea, Shin Megami Tensei, and other smash hit and superb RPGs (Digital Devil Saga 2 is one of my top 2 favorite video games of all time), however its always with the demons. And they're all REALLY hard. So, its a one trick pony flaw, although if it aint broke...
Capcom gave me Megaman and Pheonix Wright, need I say more?
Square Enix would have been in the top spot a few years ago. Final Fantasy 8 is my favorite RPG ever. However, their big players such as Hironobu Sakaguchi have left, leaving us with games like Final Fantasy X-2 and Star Ocean 3 in their wake ("Migratory Birds. I wonder what everyone's doing?" THE END!?). I still have faith in Square, FFXIII looks very interesting, but she aint what she used to be.
Namco makes alot of crap but some flowers bloom from the fertalizer there in. Tekken and Soul Calibur are the finest 3D fighters, hell fighters period, ever made. Nothing comes close. Testuya Takahashi joined up for Xenosaga (lets pretend Episode II never happened okay?) and lets not forget Katamari Damacy.
